Heath Wyatt was named the LSC Pitcher of the Year as well as earning First Team All-LSC honors.ABILENE, Texas – On the eve of the 2010 Lone Star Conference Tournament, conference officials handed out the postseason awards, with seven Southeastern players earning recognition at the awards banquet in Abilene, Texas.
Leading the way for the Savage Storm was Heath Wyatt who was tabbed the LSC Pitcher of the Year as well as earning first team all-conference honors.
Joining him on the first team were staring pitcher Jimmy Johnson and third baseman KC Pfister.
Outfielder Justin Miller was SE’s lone second team pick, while shortstop Stephen Garrett and outfielders Blake Gentry and Casey Gibson were honorable mention selections.
Academic honors were also handed out, with SE’s Mike McCollum and Blake Worthen earning a spot on the LSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
Wyatt, a junior, completed the regular season as the national leader in saves with 15 and tied the school record in appearances with 31. He has tossed 74.0 innings, all in relief, on the year and amassed a 7-6 record with a team-low ERA of 2.68.
He has fanned 59 hitters on the year and boasts a nearly 4-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio. He holds opposing hitters to a paltry .230 batting average and of the 60 hits he has allowed on the year, only 13 have gone for extra bases.
Johnson, a junior, has nearly matched those numbers from a starting role, posting a perfect 8-0 record in 12 starts with 59.0 innings pitched and a 2.75 ERA.
He has struck out 35 on the season and is holding opponents to a .295 average.
Pfister, a junior, has been an offensive catalyst for the Storm, leading the squad in RBI with 51 and moving into second in batting average with a .378 mark.
He is tied for the team lead in home runs with eight and boasts an OPS of 1.046 with an on-base percentage of .435 and a slugging mark of .611. He leads the Storm with 19 doubles and has 48 runs scored on the year.
Miller, a junior, leads SE with a .385 batting average and has provided an offensive spark for the Storm with a .474 on-base percentage, making the most of his time on base with 64 runs scored.
A big reason for his runs total is his conference best stolen base mark of 37. He is not without the ability to hit for some power, however, as he has chipped in 13 doubles, three triples and seven homers en route to 23 RBI, all from the leadoff position.
Garrett, a junior, carries a .341 average and has chipped in an OPS of .841, with an on-base percentage of .436. He’s scored 40 runs on the year and has seven doubles, a triple and a homer with 21 RBI and spent much of the season in the number two spot in the batting order. He has also added 10 steals.
Gentry, a sophomore, boasts a .377 average and has become nearly the base running threat that Miller is, scoring 54 runs on the year and swiping 31 bags, second best in the league behind his team mate.
He carries a .477 on-base percentage, a team best, as well as a .514 slugging percentage after racking up 13 doubles, a triple and three homers en route to 39 RBI on the regular season.
Gibson, a senior, battled injuries at times his senior season, but still managed a .393 average with six doubles, a triple and six home runs while driving in 29 RBI.
He boasts an OPS of 1.069 on the strength of a team-best .625 slugging percentage. He has scored 22 runs and has chipped in four stolen bases.
The Storm will next hit the field on May 1 when it opens play in the LSC Tournament with a first round matchup set for 3 p.m. at Crutcher Scott Field in Abilene, Texas.
