Baseball (1979-82)

Alan Cartwright was possibly the most outstanding hitter in Southeastern’s baseball history. He practically rewrote the record book.

Born in Dallas, Texas on January 20, 1961, he attended the Turner Public Schools near Burneyville, Oklahoma where he was an outstanding high school basketball and baseball player. Following graduation in 1979, Alan enrolled at Southeastern where his brother John had played with the 1977 national runner-up Savages.

Success came quickly for the younger outfielder as he set a Southeastern team record by hitting .450 on Coach Don Parham’s last Southeastern team. The Savages posted a 56-9 record and finished the regular season rated as the nation’s top NAIA team. Alan was named to the NAIA All-American Team.

His sophomore and junior seasons were even better under new Savage Coach Mike Metheny. He set records with 27 homeruns and 101 RBI’s in 1981 as the Savages went 61-7 and finished third in the national tournament. Cartwright was again named an NAIA All-American. The Savages made the NAIA College World Series again in 1982 and he was selected as the NAIA National Player of the Year.

In his three years as a Savage, he set several team records including homeruns, RBI’s, batting average, doubles, and triples. He was the OIC and NAIA Area 3 Player of the Year and Southeastern’s Most Outstanding Athlete in 1982. He became only the second player in Southeastern sports history to be named an All-American three times.

Cartwright was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers following his junior year and he played seven years in their farm system, mostly at the AA and AAA level. He retired from baseball in 1988.

On February 8, 1992, Southeastern Oklahoma State University honored Alan Cartwright with induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame. In January of 2008, Cartwright was enshrined in the National Association of Intercollegiate Atheltics (NAIA) Hall of Fame.
