Few have mastered the balance between sports and academics as well Jonathon Polson, who is the only Southeastern athlete to ever take home two All-American honors AND two-Academic All-American honors.
In Southeastern history a total of eight Academic All-American honors have been earned, and Polson is the only one to earn that honor twice.
Only seven SE football players have picked up multiple All-American honors on the field as well, ironically four of those seven shared the field together over the early 1990’s as Polson was joined by Greg Lornes, Jesse Palacios, and Earnest Hunter.
That’s pretty selective company for the Durant, Okla., native who had another somewhat rare distinction of getting to play on Saturday’s on the same field he had patrolled on Friday nights for Durant High School.
Polson roamed the gridiron from 1990-95 and over that time helped SE to a conference championship and an Aztec Bowl appearance as well.
He was a presence on the field and in the classroom, taking home All-America honors on the defensive side of the ball in 1993 and 1994, and also added Academic All-American recognition in 1992 and 1993.
He would add a pair of All-OIC awards and NAIA All-District recognition while also taking home Southeastern’s Male Athlete of the Year award and its Scholar Athlete award.
Polson followed his playing career with a successful coaching career with stops in the high school, Division I and Division II college ranks before stepping away from coaching to help run a family farm.
