Baseball Coach (1981-Pres.)
Mike Metheny has built a long history with SE, after a playing career and a stint as an assistant coach he took over the already successful baseball program in 1981 and continued to build on that success.
In 2006, Metheny became the 42nd coach at any NCAA division to reach the 1,000 win plateau, and has now pushed his career record to well past 1,100 wins.
He is one of eight Division II coaches to ever reach the 1,000 win plateau, and one of just three that are still active. He is second on the active coaches list by victories in Division II and third on the all-time list in the same category. He is 35th on the all-division all-time list by victories, and one of just 49 coaches at the collegiate level to have reached 1,000 wins.
Metheny guided the SE baseball program through its successful transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II. In just the second season at the D-II level he led his squad to the NCAA Division II World Series in Montgomery, Ala., and on June 3, 2000, Southeastern earned its first National Championship. His title earned him the 2000 National Coach of the Year honor at the American Baseball Coaches Convention.
While a member of the NAIA, his teams made seven trips to the NAIA World Series and earned three runner-up finishes. His teams claimed 14 conference championships and he earned conference coach of the year honors nine times and regional coach of the year seven times.
He has coached 40 All-American award winners and a pair of NAIA National Player of the Year honorees.
Metheny has also helped guide more than 50 players on to pro careers on the diamond in his time as an assistant and a head coach.
In January of 1999, he was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame while at the American Baseball Coaches Convention in Atlanta, Ga.
Mike Metheny, throughout his years guiding the Southeastern baseball program, has brought great honor to Southeastern Oklahoma State University. The University honored him with membership in the Southeastern Oklahoma State Athletics Hall of Fame on August 28, 2010.
