Football, Basketball (1932-34)
Richard Paul Hunnicutt was a two-sport star at Southeastern in the 1932-34 period. Born at Buckhorn near Muskogee, Oklahoma, Paul grew up in Warner where he attended the Warner schools and Connors Junior College. He participated in football, basketball, and baseball during this time.
Hunnicutt played football and basketball for the Savages and excelled in both. He stood 6’5’’ and weighed 200 pounds—a large man in that time. He was a center on the basketball team. He led the conference in scoring in 1934. He was the center, linebacker, and down lineman for the Savage football team where he played along side Hall of Famer Julie Bowden.
Paul played both sports under Coach Runt Ramsey. He was selected to the All-Conference First Team in basketball twice and was also a two time Second Team All-Conference football selection. He was an outstanding personality on the Southeastern campus and was recognized for his leadership in athletics.
He taught and coached in the Alma school system two years before joining the Halliburton Company in Duncan. During his ling career with that company, he held various positions including director of personnel and vice-president for manufacturing. He retired from Halliburton in 1977.
Paul Hunnicutt was an outstanding two-sport athlete at Southeastern State. He was inducted into the university’s Athletic Hall of Fame on January 30, 1982.
