Baseball (1975-77)
Scott Loucks was one of the most talented athletes in Southeastern’s sports history. He possessed great speed and a powerful throwing arm which enabled him to play centerfield with major league skill.
Loucks was born in Anchorage, Alaska on November 11, 1956. He graduated from high school in Wahiawa, Hawaii in 1974. Recruited by former Savage pitcher Richard Rountree, he enrolled at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in January 1975, and became one of the great players of a Savage baseball dynasty.
Scott hit .352 and stole fifty-three bases in 1976 while being named to the All-Conference, NAIA All-District, All-Area, and Honorable Mention All-American teams. The following year he hit .366 and once again led the nation in stolen bases with fifty-eight .He also set an NAIA record with ninety-one runs scored. He was a repeat choice for the All-Conference, All-District, and All Area teams and was named to the NAIA All-American Team.
Loucks helped lead Southeastern to the finals of the NAIA College World Series. He was selected by the Houston Astros in the seventh round of the June draft in 1977. He played professional baseball nine seasons, which included four different stints in the National League with Houston and one brief period with the Pittsburg Pirates. He stole 71 bases in 1983 while playing for Tucson in the AAA Pacific Coast League and was caught stealing only 19 times. Loucks compiled 320 stolen bases in his professional career.
Scott Loucks was an exciting athlete who helped the Savages establish the university as a national baseball power. He has brought honor to the university. Southeastern honored Scott Loucks with the induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame on February 4, 1989.
