Williams Beats Buzzer for SE Win

Box Score DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern picked up its first win of the season thanks to an Emily Williams jumper in the lane with three seconds on the clock to lift the Savage Storm to a 91-90 victory over Oklahoma Christian on Monday night in Bloomer Sullivan Arena.

The win lifts SE to 1-2 on the season and the team will be back in action against Texas A&M-Commerce on Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. in Commerce, Texas.

Williams may have been the hero, but it was Haley Schaefer that led a group of breakout performances.

Schaefer turned in a double-double with a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Storm in both categories.  She shot 8-of-14 from the floor and added a 7-of-8 effort from the free throw line as well as dishing out the assist on the game-winning bucket by Williams.

Ronay English had 16 points on 50.0 percent shooting and led the team with three steals, while Bailey Welch turned in SE's other double-digit scoring performance with 14 points along with three assists, a block and a steal.  Kayle Reaves came off the bench to add nine points and three rebounds.

Taylor Richards also turned in a breakout performance, handling the Eagle pressure like a seasoned veteran by dishing out eight assists while adding six points and six rebounds.

Despite Schaefer's 12 rebound performance, SE was outplayed on the board with OCU holding a 59-to-46 edge on the glass.  The Eagles did most of that damage on the offensive glass to the tune of 34 offensive rebounds to just six for SE, while the Storm held the edge in defensive rebounds with 40 to 25 defensive boards for OCU.

Southeastern was efficient from the field with a 53.2 percent shooting night, including a 57.1 percent mark in the first half.

The teams matched each other in points off turnovers with 25 apiece, while the Storm held the edge in the paint with a 36-36 advantage.

SE held an 89-87 lead following an English free throw with 27 seconds left, OCU's Krista Stevens would bank in a three pointer with 13 seconds left to put the Eagles up 90-89 and set up Williams' last second heroics.

The Storm fell behind 6-0 out of the gate, but after a 6-0 run of their own the two teams would find themselves trading bucket for the early part of the first half.

A pair of Welch free throws and a pair of Schaefer freebies would put SE up four points at the 13:01 mark.  SE would turn it into an 8-0 run capped by a Shcaefer layup to take a 24-16 lead.

Southeastern would push that lead out to 28-18 less than a minute later after a pair of Welch free throws.

OCU would close the gap to one point before SE again reeled off a run, turning a 36-35 lead into a 50-38 lead with 1:07 to play.

The Eagles, however, would score the last six points of the half and SE would hold a 50-44 lead at the break.

Southeastern pushed its lead back out to double-digits early in the second half on an English layup, but OCU would chip away at SE's advantage until they would snag their first lead since early in the first half at 63-62 with 14:03 remaining.

The Eagles would twice extend that advantage to four points, but SE would use a 6-0 run capped by two more Schafer free throws to regain the lead at 70-68.

Another OCU three pointer would give the Eagles a one point lead, but a pair of Welch free throws would put the Storm back in front.

That lead would get as big as six points over the final minutes, but eventually be whittled away until Stevens' three pointer went in with 13 seconds remaining to put OCU up 90-89 and set up Williams for the game winner.
