Box Score ALVA, Okla. – Southeastern road woes continued as a rough shooting afternoon led the Savage Storm to a 68-46 loss to Northwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon in Alva, Okla.
The loss drops SE to 5-9 overall on the year and 3-5 in Great American Conference play. The loss also dips the Storm to 1-6 on the road, with four of those losses coming in conference play.
“We had night where we couldn't hit any shots,” said head coach
Darin Grover, “From the outside or at the basket. Offensively, I thought our execution was pretty poor and that carried over to the defense.”
Southeastern was led by
Ronay English who turned in her first 20-point effort of the season, finishing with 20 points exactly, including four three pointers.
Natalie Ruud was the only other SE player in double-digits, coming off the bench with 10 points.
There was little else to note offensively, however, as the Storm shot 27.8 percent from the field for the game, finishing below 30 percent in both halves.
Taylor Richards reeled in a team-best six rebounds, while four others each corralled four each.
The Rangers held the edge in every specialty stat category, holding double-digit point advantages in both points off turnovers and points in the paint.
Another slow start put the Savage Storm in a hole in the first half as the Rangers jumped out to a 6-0 lead and by the middle of the first half had pushed its advantage out to 12 points at 16-4.
SE would bounce back at that point as Ruud and English combined on a 9-0 run that closed the deficit to 16-13 with 7:27 to play.
NWOSU, however, would answer by pushing its lead back out to double figures and would take a 31-21 lead at halftime.
The Rangers pushed the lead back out to 16 points to open the second half, and it would grow to 18 before the Storm used an 8-2 run capped by an
Emily Williams old-fashioned three-point play to cut the deficit to 43-31.
Unfortunately, that was as close as SE would get as the teams would trade buckets for much of the half with the lead staying in the mid-teens until NWOSU used an 8-0 run with under five minute to play to push the Ranger lead out to 64-42 with 2:32 to play.
Each team would add four points in the final two minutes to fashion the final of 68-46.
