SAN ANTONIO, Texas – For the second straight outing Southeastern gave a division I opponent all it could handle before Texas-San Antonio ultimately pulled away late as the Savage Storm fell 101-80 in its Thursday night exhibition contest in San Antonio, Texas.
Â
The Savage Storm will complete its exhibition schedule on Nov. 9 at 4 p.m. when it travels to El Paso, Texas, to take on Texas-El Paso.
Â
The SE offense shot 48.3 percent from the field for the game and put four players in double figures, led by
Darius Harris who finished with 21 on 8-of-11 shooting.
Â
He was joined by Danny Powell who turned in 14 points, while
Quinton Threadgill added 11 and
Anton Cook chipped in 10.
Â
The Storm was also 8-of-21 from long range, with Threadgill and
Sami Bzai each draining a pair of threes.
Â
Threadgill triggered the offense with seven assists and just a pair of turnovers, while
Daichi Taniguchi added three assists.
Â
Harris also hauled in a team-high seven rebounds, while Threadgill and Powell each added five.
Â
UTSA got 60 percent of its scoring from two players with Keon Lewis scoring 31 and Jeromie Hill adding 29.
Â
The teams traded punches after the opening tip until the Roadrunners pulled out to a 12-7 lead, but SE answered and tied the game at 14-14 on a Taniguchi three with 13:52 to go in the half.
Â
UTSA would regain the lead and this time push it out to six points, but back-to-back threes from Bzai would knot the score at 29-29 at the 5:37 mark.
Â
The Roadrunners would again push ahead by five points, but the Storm would again find an answer and Harris would hit the only three he took in the game with five seconds to go in the half and it would make the halftime score 40-39 in favor of UTSA.
Â
SE took a lead on its first possession of the second half on a Harris layup to go up 41-40, but the Roadrunners would answer by regaining the lead for good on its next trip down the floor.
Â
The gap would slowly grow to seven points, but a Cook layup with 12:20 to play would close it to one possession at 63-60.
Â
An 11-2 UTSA run would open up a double-digit lead, but a
Spencer Carroll three at the 9:15 mark would close the deficit back to 74-65.
Â
That would be the last time the game was single digits as the Roadrunners would pull away down the stretch by outscoring the Storm 27-15 over the final nine minutes to fashion the 101-80 final score.
