ALVA, Okla. – Southeastern evened its overall and conference record by winning its second-straight game by picking up a 69-63 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva, Okla., on Thursday.
Â
The Savage Storm improved to 10-10 overall on the year and 6-6 in Great American conference play allowing them to take over sole possession of fifth place in the league standings.
Â
Taylor Smaller and
Danny Powell dominated the game offensively as the two combined to score 47 of the team's 69 points.
Â
Smaller led all scorers with a career-high 28 points thanks to a 10-of-21 shooting effort that included four threes on the evening. It was his second-straight 20-plus point outing and his fifth on the season.
Â
Powell finished with 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting including SE's only other three of the game.
Â
Darius Harris,
Sami Bzai and
Kyle Roberts were next in line scoring with six points each.
Â
The Storm shot 45.6 percent from the field for the game, thanks to a 53.3 percent effort in the second half.
Â
The teams were even on the glass, with
Antonio Worthy leading all rebounders with 13, while Harris was right behind with 11.
Â
Worthy and Harris also made their presence felt on the defensive end with Worthy blocking four shots, while Harris added a block and three steals.
Â
The teams were even for most of the first half with neither team stretching its lead beyond four points.
Â
With the Rangers up three with 6:15 to go in the half a Bzai layup would kick off a 9-0 run capped by a Powel layup that would see the Storm take a six point lead before finally settling on a 24-21 advantage at halftime.
Â
Southeastern would maintain its lead early and would put together a 15-3 run between the 17:05 mark and the 11:49 mark of the second half, opening up a 47-32 advantage.
Â
NWOSU would slowly chip away at the Storm advantage, eventually closing to within four points at 60-56 with 3:13 to play.
Â
A Smaller jumper would answer that and four points would be as close as the Rangers would get, doing so three more times.
Â
The final time would come with 10 seconds to play, and would be answered by a pair of Bzai free throws which would ultimately be the final points of the game to seal the 69-63 SE win. Â
