DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern will open the 2015-16 women's basketball season by taking part in the GAC/MIAA Classic in Alva, Okla. on Nov. 13-14.
Â
The Savage Storm open with a 6 p.m. matchup with Central Oklahoma on Friday and will finish the event at 6 p.m. on Saturday against Northeastern State.
Â
SE enters the year after a 20-win season in which
Darin Grover took home the league's Coach of the Year honors and advanced to the semifinals of the GAC tournament.
Â
The Storm return all-conference honorees
Kaylie Baxter and
Olivia Potter, but will be looking to replace top-scorer and first team selection
Emily Williams.
Â
The team was picked to finish fifth in the Great American Conference preseason poll, but could very easily have been as high as third as a group including the Storm, Southwestern Oklahoma State and Arkansas-Monticello were within three points of one another in the final tally.
Â
While Williams departs as the team's top scorer, SE does bring back its next three highest scorers as well as well as six players who started at least one game a year ago, including two who started all 30.
Â
Baxter and
Shelby Hill started in all 30 contests, while more than half of the returning team had a start last season.
Â
The Storm shot 40.5 percent from the field a season ago and 35.7 percent from three point range while scoring 72.7 ppg and holding opponents to 65.0 per outing.
Â
Southeastern picked up a pair of wins over UCO and NSU to open the 2014-15 season in the inaugural GAC/MIAA Challenge, downing the Bronchos 69-66 and the RiverHawks 59-54.
