SE Splits on Opening Day in Tucson

TUCSON, Ari. – No.4  Southeastern dropped its opener at the NFCA Division II Leadoff Classic 6-2 to Colorado Mesa, but bounced back in a big way with a 15-4 run-rule win in six innings over Fort Lewis on Friday night on the first day of the event in Tucson, Ari.

The Savage Storm move to 1-1 to open the 2015 season and will close out pool play with a game against Regis at 10 a.m. central time, 9 a.m. in Tucson.

In SE's bounce back win to end the day, the Storm broke a 3-3 tie with seven runs in the fourth inning and would add another five in the top of the sixth to open up a 15-3 lead.

FLC would add a run in the bottom of the sixth, but it would not stave off the run rule.

Jessica Simmons and Arianna Jones each turned in three hits to lead the way, while Darrian Williams, Sydney Kramer and Courtney Riddle each added two.

Every SE hitter that went to the plate in the game collected a hit.

Simmons, Williams, Kramer and Riddle each tallied two RBI, with Kramer and Riddle each homering while Simmons, Kramer, Breanna Smith, Haley Strawn and Jones each stole a base in the game.

Ashley Moore collected her first win in the circle by tossing a complete game with four runs on eight hits over 6.0 innings with a pair of strikeouts.

The first game presented the Storm with more trouble though.

A Kramer single in the first would score Simmons and give SE a 1-0 lead, but a six run third inning would put the Storm in a hole they were unable to climb out of.

Jordyn James would drive in Simmons in the seventh looking to mount a rally, but the final score would hold to be 6-2.

Kramer and Riddle each had a pair of hits, while Kramer and James each drove in a run.

Simmons would add a hit, score twice and turn in a stolen base.

Jacee Bennett suffered the loss, allowing four runs on five hits with four K's before Jessica Seay came in to toss the final 5.0 innings and allow a pair of runs on four hits.
