Baseball Splits Twinbill at UAM

MONTICELLO, Ark – Southeastern salvaged a split on Monday afternoon against Arkansas-Monticello, taking the series finale 9-5 in eight innings after dropping the opener 10-2 earlier in the afternoon in Monticello, Ark.
 
The split moves the Savage Storm to 15-22 overall on the season and 11-11 in Great American Conference play heading into the season ending series with rival East Central April 24-25 in Ada, Okla., likely with the final spot in the conference tournament on the line.
 
Brandon Grimsley homered twice in the finale and drove in five runs while going 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the offense.
 
Conner Koepp and Brayon Colley added a pair of hits each while Dylan Helms, Jacob Soisson and Chance Burcham had one apiece.
 
In addition to Grimsley's five RBI, Helms, Soisson, Burcham and Colley each drove in one.
 
Corban Taylor picked up the win in relief after tossing 3.2 innings and allowing a pair of runs on a hit with three strikeouts.
 
Nick Johnson got the start and tossed 4.1 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with two K's.
 
Soisson opened scoring with an RBI single in the first and Grimsley added a three-run homer in the second to open up a 4-0 lead.
 
UAM chipped away with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to close to 4-3.
 
A Burcham single in the sixth would stretch the lead to 5-3, but the Boll Weevils picked up two in the bottom half to knot the game at 5-5 and send it to extras.
 
Once there, a Colley RBI double broke the tie in the top of the eighth, followed by a Helms RBI single.
 
Grimsley capped the inning with a two-run homer to open up a 9-5 lead which would be the final.
 
SE scored first in the opener with an RBI double by Colley in the fourth inning, but UAM answered with five runs in the bottom and the Storm never recovered.
 
Grimsley would homer in the fifth to cut into the deficit, but the Weevils would add three in the seventh and two more in the eighth to pull away with the 10-2 win.
 
Helms, Grimsley and Soisson turned in two hit outings in the contest, while Cody Luman, Cody Coats and Colley each had one.
 
Colley and Grimsley each accounted for an RBI.
 
Brady Colbert took the loss in his second start of the year after allowing seven runs, four earned, on nine hits over 6.0 innings with six strikeouts.
 
Evan Sanders tossed one-third of an inning and was responsible for a run, before Luman fnished the game with 1.2 innings pitched, allowing a pair of runs on three hits with four K's.
