MONTICELLO, Ark. – Southeastern got complete games from
Tristen Wood and
Mike Wade, but the offense found itself on the short end of a pair of losses at Arkansas-Monticello, dropping game one 3-1 and game two 4-3 on Saturday afternoon in Monticello, Ark.
Â
The losses drop the Savage Storm to 1-11 to open the year and 0-6 in Great American Conference play.
Â
Wood went the distance in the opener, tossing 8.0 innings and allowing three unearned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts, but took the loss.
Â
Southeastern matched UAM in hits at eight each, led by
Cade Clay who turned in a 3-for-4 effort, while
Brett Akins added a pair of hits.
Â
The Boll Weevils took an early 2-0 lead with a homer in the first inning, but the Storm would cut the deficit to 2-1 when Clay scored in the sixth on a double-play.
Â
UAM would tack on a run in the bottom of the sixth, and SE would leave runners on second in the seventh and eighth innings and were unable to rally in a 3-1 loss.
Â
In the finale Wade was tagged for four runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings of work with one strikeout.
Â
Akins would collect a pair of hits with a pair of RBI to lead the SE offense, while
Hunter Harrison would add a hit and an RBI as well.
Â
AUM would score in each of the first two innings and take a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning.
Â
That's when SE would load the bases with two outs and see Akins tie the game with a two-run single to plate
Luke Thomas and
Jett Swigart.
Â
One batter later Harrison would single home
Travis Spinney and the Storm would lead 3-2 heading to the bottom of the seventh.
Â
Unfortunately, after retiring the first batter the Weevils would connect on three straight hits, with the last one bringing home a pair of runs and handing SE a 4-3 loss.
