SE Splits at TAMIU on Saturday

LAREDO, Texas – Southeastern exploded for 12 runs on 13 hits in the series finale on Saturday afternoon to pick up a 12-2 win over Texas A&M-International, offsetting a 4-0 loss to the Dustdevils earlier in the day in Laredo, Texas.

The split moves the Savage Storm to 1-2 on the season and slides head coach Mike Metheny one close to breaking the NCAA Division II All-Time Wins record, now needing just six to set the new record.

Jake Perez posted a 3-for-4 outing in the nightcap with a pair of RBI, while Brett Akins, Garrin Young, Cade Clay and Gage Ross each tallied two hits.

Young drove in four runs, while Akins, Perez and Ross pushed home two each.

Cody Nitson got the start and collected the first win of the year with 5.0 innings of work while allowing two runs on six hit with a strikeout.

Tristen wood would come on in relief and toss 2.0 scoreless inning and allow a hit while striking out two.

The Storm scored early and often, taking advantage of a Young triple to plate three runs in the first inning, followed by RBI singles from Clay and Ross to open up a 5-0 lead.

TAMIU would get a run back in the bottom of the first, but Southeastern would again find its offense, first taking advantage of an error which allowed Akins to score for a 6-1 edge.

One batter later a Young groundout would tack on another run for a 7-1 advantage.

Two batters after that Perez would double home two more runs and the inning was capped by a two-run Akins single which opened up an 11-1 lead.

Again the Dustdevils answered with one run to make it 11-2, but a Ross RBI single in the top of the third would give the Storm a 12-2 lead which proved to be the final margin.

Ty Hanson collected the team's lone hit in the first game of the day.

Hayden Grimes was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on six hits in 4.2 innings of work before giving way to Jake Patterson who allowed a run o two hits without recording an out.

Bailey Burks would finish the game by tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with one hit allowed.
