Storm Baseball Swept on Sunday

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Mike Metheny's chase for the NCAA Division II wins record was prolonged on Sunday as a Southeastern rally in game one fell short in an 11-10 loss before Ouachita Baptist took the rubber match in the finale by a 7-5 margin in Arkadelphia, Ark.

The losses drop the Savage Storm to 6-19-1 overall on the year and 5-11 in Great American Conference play.

Following the losses Metheny remains tied for the NCAA Division II wins record with Joe Roberts, with his next victory giving him the record outright.

In the opener SE piled up 15 hits with Hunter Harrison and Travis Spinney posting three-hit outing, while Cameron Roberts, Jett Swigart and Gage Ross added two hits apiece.

Spinney posted three RBI and Harrison drove in two, with Cade Clay, Micah Simmer, Swigart, and Ross driving in one each.

Seven pitchers combined on the nint inning contest, with Scott Richards getting the start and allowing five runs, three earned, on three hits in an inning pitched.

Jake Patterson, Michael Brinska, Tristen Wood and Cory Scheibner would combine to toss 3.1 innings and allow five runs, four earned, on six hits.

Cody Nitson would turn in the longest outing by tossing 3.1 innings and scattering four hits, while Brandon Wolski tossed one-third of an inning but was saddled with the loss after allowing a run on a hit.

A Harrison RBI double in the top of the first would give SE a 1-0 lead, but OBU would answer with a four-run bottom half to go up 4-1.

Swigart would connect on an RBI single and later score on an error to trim the deficit to 4-3.

The Tigers would add a run to make it 5-3, but a Simmer RBI single in the third would again close it to 5-4.

A four-run third inning by OBU would stretch its edge to 9-4 and in the fourth a Clay RBI single would make it 9-5.

Another Tiger run in the fourth would push the edge back to 10-5, but the Storm would begin chipping away in the fifth with a two-run Spinney single to close it to 10-7.

A Ross single in the seventh would get it to 10-8, followed by a Harrison homer in the eighth and a game-tying RBI single by Spinney in the ninth to make the score 10-10.

However, OBU would get a leadoff home run in the bottom of the ninth to hand SE an 11-10 loss.

In the finale Spinney, Clay and Swigart collected the team's three hits, with Harrison, Simmer, Luke Thomas and Swigart driving in a run each.

Hayden Grimes would get the start on the hill and go 3.2 innings while allowing four runs on five hits before Brandon Wolski took over and was hit with the loss after allowing three runs on four hits in 2.1 innings pitched.

A Swigart RBI single in the second and a Harrison RBI in the third would give the Storm a 2-0 lead early, but OBU would respond with a four-run fourth to regain the lead.

SE responded in the fifth as Simmer and Thomas tied the game by drawing bases-loaded walks before Brett Akins scored on an error to give SE a 5-4 lead midway through the fifth inning.

However, the Tigers would get a pair of runs in the fifth to swipe the lead back and added a run in the sixth to fashion the 7-5 final score.
