ALVA, Okla. – Southeastern got back in the win column in a big way on Saturday afternoon, first cruising to a 16-3 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State in game one of the double-header before taking the finale 3-1 to wrap up the Saturday sweep in Alva, Okla.
The wins lift the Savage Storm to 3-12 overall on the year and 2-7 in Great American Conference play while also snapping a 10-game losing skid.
The wins also move head coach
Mike Metheny closer to the NCAA Division II record for victories as he is now four away from becoming the winningest coach by victories in Division II history.
Hunter Harrison and
Garrin Young powered the southeastern offense in game with, finishing with four-hit efforts, with Harrison posting five RBI and Young adding one.
Ty Hanson would collect three hits and
Cade Clay and
Micah Simmer added two each.
Travis Spinney,
Brett Akins and Simmer each drove in two runs, while
Ty Hanson, Clay, and
Jett Swigart added an RBI each.
Hayden Grimes went the distance for the Storm to collect his first win of the year after tossing 8.0 innings and allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits with six strikeouts.
The Southeastern offense would get rolling in the third inning as the first three hitters reached safely, with Simmer scoring when Spinney reached on an error.
Akins followed with an RBI groundout, which was followed by an RBI Harrison double and an RBI Hanson single to open up a 4-0 lead.
Clay would walk and
Cameron Roberts would single to reload the bases and Swigart would bring home another run on an RBI fielder's choice.
Simmer then followed with an RBI single to take a 6-0 lead, while a Young RBI infield single would push the lead to 7-0.
Clay would connect on an RBI single in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead, but the Rangers would cut into the advantage with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
However, that was as close as it would get as Simmer would score on a passed ball followed by a Harrison two-run single in the seventh to stretch the edge to 11-3.
Simmer and Spinney would add RBI hits in the eighth and an Akins sac fly would make the score 14-3 with two outs.
Harrison would cap off the game's scoring with a two-run homer that also scored Spinney and fashioned the final of 16-3.
The nightcap was more in the line with a pitcher's duel as
Mike Wade got the start and collected the win after allowing a run on four hits in 4.1 innings pitched before
Brandon Wolski came on to toss the final 2.2 innings and record a save after scattering a pair of hit and striking out three.
Hanson collected the team's only multi-hit outing with two, while Spinney and Simmer each tallied an RBI.
NWOSU took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Storm immediately answered in the top of the third as Swigart would score to tie the game on a Simmer double to left center, and after moving to third Simmer would come home on a Spinney RBI triple for the 2-1 lead.
It was then Spinney's turn to score on a passed ball to take the 3-1 lead which would hold to be the final score.
