DURANT, Okla. –
Markell Henderson turned in a season-high 30 points to pace Southeastern to a 78-69 win over Ouachita Baptist on Thursday night in Bloomer Sullivan Arena.
Â
The win lifts the Savage Storm to 5-6 overall on the year and 4-2 in Great American Conference play heading into a 3 p.m. matchup on Jan. 6 against Henderson State.
Â
Henderson led all scorers by a wide margin, shooting 11-of-15 from the floor and hitting a perfect 5-of-5 from three point range.
Â
Jett Jobe joined him in double-figures with 13 points, while
DJ Henderson chipped in 11 points off the bench.
Â
"You look like a great coach when the ball goes in the basket," said head coach
Kelly Green. "Everything you draw up goes in, and we took a couple of ill-advised shots even late and fortunately some of them went in. That is one of the things we have been talking about lately, in the past couple of games we run decent offense, then we get open and miss shots. When the ball goes in the basket it puts a whole different perspective on what you're doing on your defensive end."
Â
The team shot a season-best 63.0 percent from the field and added a 52.2 percent mark from behind the arc by hitting 12-of-23 threes.
Â
The Storm dished out 20 assists as a team, led by Jobe's seven, while
Adam Dworsky added four.
Â
James Donelan led the team in rebounding with seven of the team's 21 total boards.
Â
SE jumped out to a 10-2 lead early, but saw a 10-0 OBU run erase the lead and leave the Tigers up 12-10 by the 12:51 mark of the first half.
Â
The teams would then trade the lead on back-to-back possessions before The Storm would regain the advantage for good, maintaining a one-possession lead until the 2:44 mark when
Markell Henderson knocked down a three to go up 28-22.
Â
SE would maintain the lead and a Jobe three at the buzzer to end the half would make the edge 36-28 at halftime.
Â
The lead was cut down to just two points early in the second half and sat at three points with 14:13 to play when the Storm put together a 19-3 run that was capped by a
Ryan Scott-McGuire three-point play with 8:40 to play to give Southeastern its largest lead of the night at 62-43.
Â
OBU would whittle away at the lead down the stretch with a buzzer beating layup cutting it back to single digits, and SE hanging on for a 78-69 win.
