DURANT, Okla. – Despite 22 points from
Katie Webb, a rough-shooting second quarter left Southeastern in a whole they were unable to get out of on Friday in a 71-57 loss at Pittsburg State in Pittsburg, Kan.
Â
The loss drops the Savage Storm to 1-1 on the season heading into a nine-day break around the Thanksgiving with the team returning to action on Nov. 25 at 2 p.m. in Bloomer Sullivan Arena against Texas A&M-Commerce.
Â
Webb's 22 points led all scorers in the contest and marks her second 20-point scoring outing in as many games. She finished shooting 9-of-15 from the field with a pair of threes.
Â
She was joined in double figures by
Katie Branam who turned in 11 points with a pair of threes, while
Tracy Johnson just missed double-digits with nine points on a trio of threes.
Â
The remainder of the Storm's scoring came from
Briley Moon and
Jordan Benson off the bench as they each turned in seven points.
Â
Webb also led the storm on the glass with eight rebounds, while Johnson was right behind with seven boards.
Â
Webb and
Alix Robinson each handed out two assists, while Moon snagged three steals.
Â
Webb and Johnson handled all of the scoring in the first quarter for the Storm, with Webb finishing with seven in the frame while Johnson drained a pair of threes to finish with six, but SE trailed 14-13 at the end of the first.
Â
PSU opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run and the Storm found itself down 24-15 before a Webb three at the midway point of the quarter closed the gap to 24-18. That was as close as SE would get after the run, with the Gorillas pushing out to a 14 point lead before a
Jordan Benson three at the buzzer closed the gap to 34-23 at the halftime break.
Â
The teams matched each other in the third quarter, posting equal 20 point outings in the quarter. SE would get to within seven points on a pair of
Briley Moon free throws, before the deficit moved back to 11 points at the break.
Â
Southeastern was never able to kickstart a rally in the fourth quarter, getting outscored in the frame 17-14, with a Moon three in the closing seconds setting the final score at 71-57.
