Southeastern Sweeps Bulldogs to Win Series

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Southeastern piled up 22 hits on the day and picked up a Saturday sweep of Southwestern Oklahoma State, winning game one 11-4 before taking the finale 5-1 to win the season series in Weatherford, Okla.

The sweep lifts the Savage Storm to 10-11 overall on the year and 6-6 in Great American Conference play.

Brett Akins led all hitters in the first contest with three hits, while Bryce Deatherage, Travis Spinney, and Austin Ferguson put up two hits apiece.

Ferguson and Cade Clay had two RBI each, with Deatherage, Spinney, Easton Elliott, Joseph Cerda, and Jett Swigart each driving in one.

Greg Hubbell got the start and picked up the win after tossing 6.0 innings and allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out four.

Hayden Grimes came on in relief and recorded a save after scattering two hits and two K's over three innings.

SWOSU took a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the second inning, but Southeastern answered in the third inning, first when Swigart, Deatherage, and Spinney scored on a Ferguson single.

Cerda followed by drawing a bases-loaded walk, followed by a two-run Clay single to open up a 6-1 lead midway through the third.

Spinney would drive in Swigart in the fourth to stretch the lead to 7-1.

The Bulldogs closed the gap to 7-4 in the bottom of the fourth on a three-run homer, but a solo shot by Elliott in the top of the fifth would push it to 8-4.

Later in the inning Swigart would sac fly home Cerda, followed by a Deatherage RBI single to open up a 10-4 lead.

Cerda would then drive home Akins in the ninth to fashion the 11-4 final.

In the series finale, Cerda, Spinney, and Akins would connect on a pair of hits, with Cerda accounting for all four RBI.

Deatherage collected the win on the hill after tossing a complete game and allowing one unearned run on nine hits while striking out three.

Cerda put the Storm on the board in the second inning with a three-run double.

SWOSU would get a run back in the bottom half of the second, but Caleb Dubler would come home on an error in the fourth and Cerda would single home Swigart in the sixth to fashion the 5-1 final score.
