Baseball Splits Twinbill Versus OBU

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern opened the day with a walk-off 8-7 victory over Oklahoma Baptist, but finished the day on the wrong end of an 8-7 loss in the nightcap on Friday afternoon at The Ballpark in Durant.
 
The split moves the Savage Storm to 19-23 overall and 14-15 in Great American Conference play with the series finale slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
 
In the opener, Austin Ferguson posted a 4-for-4 effort at the plate, with Brett Akins adding a pair of hits and five others picking up one each.
 
Akins drove in five runs in the contest, While Travis Spinney, Cade Clay, and Jett Swigart added an RBI each.
 
Cody Nitson got the start and took a no decision after tossing 7.0 innings and allowing six runs on nine hits with six strikeouts.
 
Greg Hubbell tossed an inning in relief and allowed a hit before Bryce Deatherage came on to finish the game and earn the victory after allowing an unearned run on a hit
 
The Bison opened up a 1-0 lead with a sac fly to score a run in the top of the second, but the Storm found its answer in the bottom of the third inning.
 
It started with a sac fly by Spinney to tie the game at 1-1 and was followed three batters later when Akins connected on a grand slam to open up a 5-1 lead after three innings.
 
OBU answered with a solo homer to close to 5-2, but Akins tacked on an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to stretch the lead to 6-2.
 
The Bison got another run on a solo shot to cut into the SE lead and make it 6-3 in the top of the sixth.
 
Swigart answered by leading off the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer to stretch the lead to 7-3 after six innings.
 
OBU would get three runs on a double in the top of the seventh to close the gap to 7-6, and tie the game at 7-7 on SE's first error in the top of the ninth.
 
SE would pick up the walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth with two outs when Clay connected on a double down the right field line to plate Ferguson for the 8-7 game winner.
 
In the nightcap, Spinney, Joseph Cerda, Easton Elliott, and Swigart each posted a pair of hits.
 
Cerda drove in a pair of runs, as did Swigart, while Ferguson, Harrison Whitworth, and Clay each plated one.
 
Deatherage got the start in game two and took the loss after allowing six runs on six hits in 2.0 innings with three strikeouts.
 
Jake Patter came on in relief and was tagged with two runs on three hits with one K, while Greg Hubbell tossed the final 3.0 innings and allowed a pair of hits while striking out three.
 
SE took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Ferguson RBI single, but the Bison answered with seven runs in the top of the third to open up a 7-1 lead.
 
Cerda tacked on an RBI single in the bottom of the third before OBU added another run in the top of the fourth to stretch the lead to 8-2.
 
Whitworth, Clay, and Cerda each plated a run in the bottom of the fourth and the Storm closed the gap to 8-7 with a two0-run Swigart double in the fifth, but that was as close as they would get in an 8-7 loss.
