DENTON, Texas –
Briley Moon knocked down a three with two seconds left on the clock in overtime and
Logan Oestreich stole the ensuing in-bound pass to preserve a 61-59 come-from-behind victory over Texas Woman's on Wednesday night in the season opener in Denton, Texas.
Â
The win gets the Savage Storm off to a 1-0 start on the season heading into the home opener slated for 7 p.m. on Nov. 16 in Bloomer Sullivan Arena against Oklahoma Christian.
Â
SE scored first in overtime on a
Tracy Johnson three and held that lead until the 1:34 mark when TWU's Brielle Woods connected on a layup to put the Pioneers ahead 59-58.
Â
The Storm looked to be in trouble as a three missed the mark with 16 seconds to play, but an offensive rebound would keep hope alive and Moon would connect with two ticks left on the clock to put the Storm up 61-59.
Â
After a trio of timeouts to set up the final play, Oestreich would steal the Pioneer in bound pass to seal the 61-59 victory.
Â
Kamryn Cantwell led the Storm offense with 18 points, while
Katie Webb was next in line with 15.
Â
Tracy Johnson came off the bench to add 12 pints in the effort, with
Neely Noel doing the same to add seven.
Â
Cantwell also handed out four assists, while
Haiden Williams and
Jordan Benson dished out two apiece.
Â
Webb just missed a double-double with nine rebounds, while Cantwell was right behind with eight boards.
Â
Southeastern got off to a slow start, shooting 23.5 percent from the field in the first quarter and hitting just one of seven from three-point range.
Â
The Storm trailed by as many as 14 in the opening frame at 19-5, but Webb would score the final five points of the quarter to close that gap to 19-10.
Â
SE continued to play catch up in the second quarter with the lead hovering near double digits until a Noel three triggered a 7-0 run that was capped by a Webb layup to make the halftime deficit 28-24.
Â
A Webb jumper and a Cantwell free throw to open the third quarter closed the gap to one point, and a Webb layup with 5:15 to go in the frame would again make it a one-point game, but TWU would not relinquish its lead and pulled ahead to take a 49-42 lead to the fourth quarter.
Â
Southeastern would never lead in the fourth quarter, but a
Chandler Kemp layup with 3:46 to go would tie the game at 51-51.
Â
TWU would get a bucket with 1:53 to play to regain the lead, but a Webb jumper with 1:28 on the clock would again tie the score at 53-53 which would hold to be the score at the end of regulation.
