SE Wins Battle of the Storms on Senior Day

DURANT, Okla. – Senior Cody Nitson tossed 8.2 innings and struck out 10 as Southeastern collected 12 hits and cruised to a 9-3 victory over Southern Nazarene on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at Mike Metheny Field.

The win lifts the Savage Storm to 16-18 overall and 9-13 in Great American Conference play with games two and three of the series slated for a 1 p.m. double-header on Monday afternoon back at Mike Metheny Field.

Eight Southeastern players were recognized for senior day with Nitson being joined by Bryce Deatherage, Caleb Dubler, Harrison Whitworth, Austin Ferguson, Cody Johnson, and Joseph Cerda.

Cerda, still recovering from injuries suffered in a hit-and-run accident earlier this season, was recognized during the Senior Day ceremony and was also listed in the lineup to begin the game and the Savage Storm threw out the game's first pitch without a second baseman in honor of his absence.

Nitson reached double-digit strikeouts for the third time this season and moved to 4-3 overall on the year after scattering six hits and three runs over 8.2 innings to earn the win.

Cody Johnson would pick up the final out to finish the game.

Drew Bolin, Dubler, Ferguson, Whitworth, and Deatherage each recorded a pair of hits, while Colton Buckner and Davis Jenks each had one.

Dubler and Deatherage had two RBI apiece, while Bolin, Ferguson, Buckner, Jenks, and Whitworth added an RBI each.

SE got on the board in the second inning as a Deatherage double would plate a pair of runs and was immediately followed by a Bolin RBI single to score Deatherage for a 3-0 lead.

Ferguson would tack on another run when he reached on an error by the first baseman that allowed Bolin to come in for a 4-0 lead.

SNU would get on the board on a balk in the top of the fourth, but Southeastern would get the offense moving again in the fourth inning, picking up two runs on a Dubler double and then stretching its lead to 7-1 on a Buckner sac fly to score Bolin.

A Whitworth double in the bottom of the fifth would extend the SE advantage to 8-1 when Reagan Warren scored.

SNU would pick up two runs on an RBI double in the top of the sixth to cut the Storm edge to 8-3 midway through six innings.

Jenks would score Dubler in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly to stretch the lead to 9-3 heading to the final inning which would hold to be the final score.
