Southeastern Tripped Up at HSU

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Kevin Buckingham dropped 33 points, 20 of them in the first half, but it was not enough as No. 19 Southeastern saw its six-game winning streak come to an end in a 67-63 loss at Henderson State on Saturday afternoon in Arkadelphia, Ark.
 
The loss drops the Savage Storm to 15-4 overall on the season and 9-3 in Great American Conference play.
 
Buckingham posted his second-highest scoring effort of the season, shooting 12-of-20 from the floor overall and hitting 5-of-8 from three-point range. He would wrap the double-double with 11 rebounds, posting his second double-double of the season.
 
Adam Dworsky shot 50.0 percent from the floor and finished the game with 17 points but was held to his second-lowest assist total of the season with four.
 
The teams traded buckets out of the gate with SE putting together a 6-0 run to take a 12-7 lead early after back-to-back Buckingham layups.
 
HSU would tie the game at 12-12 by the 10:58 mark, but Buckingham would score the next eight points for the Storm to trigger a 16-8 run, opening up a 28-20 lead with 4:19 to play in the half.
 
The Reddies scored the next six points to close the gap to two points before back-to-back buckets from Buckingham and Al Ervin to give SE a 32-27 lead at the half.
 
The Storm maintained the lead early in the second half before an HSU 7-0 run would put the home team ahead 42-40 by the 13:12 mark.
 
A Manek three would regain the lead for SE, which it would hold until an 8-2 run put the Storm down 52-50 with 7:06 to play.
 
A Kayo Goncalves three would trigger a 12-4 run capped by a pair of Buckingham free throws that put Southeastern back in front 62-56 with 2:54 to play.
 
The Reddies answered with the game's next nine points to take a 65-62 lead with eight second to play.
 
Dworsky would go to the free throw line needing to make one and miss one, but after hitting the first the Storm were unable to get he rebound and would ultimately fall 67-63.
