ARKADELPHIA, Ark. –
Kamryn Cantwell posted a game-high 24 points, but it was not enough to lift Southeastern past Henderson State on Saturday afternoon in a 76-57 road loss in Arkadelphia, Ark.
Â
The loss drops the Savage Storm to 7-9 overall on the season and 5-5 in Great American Conference play.
Â
"Not hitting shots," said head coach
Darin Grover. "We shot 33 percent overall and you can't win games shooting 33 percent. Actually, our three-point percentage was better than our field goal percentage. Once we got inside the arc we just couldn't finish."
Â
"So we'll start on the offensive side," continued Grover. "They were doubling us hard. And we need to get ready, because everyone is going to be using those blueprints to hurt us. We turned it over against those double teams, we missed shots against those double teams, but we had open shots. When we didn't turn it over, we had open shots."
Â
Cantwell finished the contest hitting 6-of-9 from the floor and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc while adding a 10-of-12 effort at the free throw line. She would also pace SE on the boards with seven rebounds.
Â
Briley Moon was the other Storm player in double-figures, finishing with 13 points with a pair of threes. She also handed out a team-best three assists.
Â
Lauren Beason and
Chandler Kemp were next in line with five points each.
Â
Southeastern jumped to an early 4-0 lead to open the game after Kemp and
Caitlin Kobiske buckets, but the Reddies would respond and knot the game at 4-4 by the 6:46 mark.
Â
A Moon three would regain the lead for the Storm and SE would lead 9-7 with 4:51 to play in the first quarter, but HSU would rattle off a 14-2 run to end the quarter and take a 21-11 lead at the quarter break.
Â
SE would trim the deficit to six points early in the second quarter, but the Reddies would again go on a run, this one a 16-0 stretch that left the Storm trailing 37-15 with 3:44 to go in the first half.
Â
Southeastern would chip away at the deficit, getting as close as 16 points before a Moon Free throw would ultimately send the game to the half with the Storm trailing 40-23.
Â
SE would make moves in the second half, twice trimming the deficit to 11 points in the third quarter, the last time on a
Haiden Williams three with 2:40 to play in the quarter.
Â
Unfortunately, Southeastern was unable to get any closer than 11 points as HSU would hold off any Storm rally to make the final 76-57.
