BETHANY, Okla. – Turnovers proved costly as Southeastern was unable to build any momentum on Saturday afternoon in a 69-45 loss on the road to Southern Nazarene in Bethany, Okla.
Â
The loss drops the Savage Storm to 9-11 overall on the season and 7-7 in Great American Conference play heading into a Monday night matchup with Southwestern Oklahoma State at 5:30 p.m. in Bloomer Sullivan Arena.
Â
"They were more physical than us," said head coach
Darin Grover. "They deny passing lanes which when people do that the good part is that there isn't as much help at the basket. We would try to get dribble handoffs and they would just push between us and the ball, and we couldn't even reverse the ball, we couldn't move the ball. And then a lot of times what we do, we try to back people in and when we did that we couldn't finish those shots. Or we kicked it out and they had the help and we couldn't finish those shots. When you can't force help in situations, it's really difficult to score."
Â
Briley Moon was the team's lone double-digit scorer with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting while also pulling down a team-best four rebounds.
Â
Kentoya Woods was next in line with seven points, while
Chandler Kemp and
Grace Alverson each added six.
Â
The Storm were bitten by 18 turnovers, second most of the season, and saw that compounded by a 35.4 percent shooting effort.
Â
SNU scored the first five points of the game, with SE answering with four-straight, but the Crimson Storm would finish with eight of the last 10 points of the quarter and Southeastern trailed 13-6 after one quarter.
Â
The Second quarter saw SNU push its lead to double figures, stretching to 15 points before buckets from
Kamryn Cantwell and Moon in the final minute would close the halftime deficit to 29-18.
Â
Southern Nazarene would extend its lead in the third as the Storm hit 25.0 percent for the quarter and SNU held a 23-10 edge, extending the lead to 52-28.
Â
