Hot Bats Power Southeastern to Season-Opening Win

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern blasted five home runs, two off the bat of Reid Rice on its way to a season-opening 10-1 victory over Colorado-Colorado Springs on Thursday afternoon at Mike Metheny Field.

The win earns the Savage Storm a 1-0 start to the season with a double-header between the two teams slated for Friday beginning at 11 a.m. back at Mike Metheny Field.

Coby Grimsley led SE on the day with a 3-for-3 performance that included a home run, three RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base.

Rice and Yanluis Ortiz each went 2-for-4 in the effort, with Rice homering twice and driving in three runs, while Ortiz homered once and drove in two.

John David Muse would add a home run as well, while Damon Burroughs and Austin Thorp each added a hit.

On the hill, Cameron Hauch got the start and earned the victory after tossing six innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits while striking out five.

Jared Barta would allow a hit in two innings of relief work while adding a pair of strikeouts before Charlie Deeds came on for an inning and allowed a hit without giving up a run.

Both teams went in order in the first inning, but Rice would lead off the bottom of the second with a solo shot to put SE on the board.

Wesley Mitchell would then reach on an error, coming around to score on a Grimsley RBI single for the 2-0 lead.

A two-run homer in Rice's next plate appearance in the third inning would double that lead to 4-0.

UCCS would take advantage of an error to plate a run in the top of the fourth, but Grimsley would reach on a single before moving around and scoring on a wild pitch to push the edge to 5-1 in the bottom half of the inning.

Grimsley would strike long ball pay dirt in the sixth inning with a two-run blast to right center, stretching the lead to 7-1.

Another second-batter two-run homer in the seventh, this one by Ortiz, would push the advantage to 9-1.

Muse would cap the scoring in the bottom of the eighth with a solo homer to right field, setting up the final of 10-1.
