Southeastern Holds on For Win Over SAU

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Brennen Burns put up 24 points, including a key pair of free throws in the final second, to help lead Southeastern to a 73-71 road victory over Southern Arkansas on Saturday afternoon in Magnolia, Ark.
 
The win lifts the Savage Storm to 17-7 overall on the season and 13-3 in Great American Conference play, while SAU slips to 9-13 on the year and 7-9 in league play.
 
Burns hit 10-of-16 from the floor and added a 4-for-4 performance from the free throw line while handing out three assists and snagging four steals.
 
Kyle Leslie would knock down a trio of threes on his way to a 15 point performance, while Robert Briley came off the bench to add 12, hitting 5-of-7 overall.
 
Kody Clouet and Elijah Hughey each just missed double-figures with eight apiece.
 
Landon Condiff would pull down a team-high seven rebounds, with Briley next up with six.
 
The Muleriders would jump out in front early, pushing out to a 10-6 lead over the first five minutes.
 
SE would bounce back, taking a brief lead before SAU knotted the game at 14-14 at the 10:50 mark.
 
The Storm reeled off seven-straight points over the next 1:25, matching its largest lead of the half before SAU would close the gap, cutting the SE lead to 36-34 at halftime.
 
After trading buckets early in the second half, Southeastern would use a 20-7 run to push the Storm advantage to a game-high 12 points with 8:02 to play.
 
The Muleriders would put together a 13-2 run over the next three and a half minutes, cutting the SE lead to 60-59 with 4:41 to play.
 
The Storm would maintain the lead, with SAU closing the gap to one point again with 3:28 to play before Southeastern pushed the advantage back to 70-64 with 1:12 to play.
 
The Muleriders would close the gap to one possession, trailing 71-69 with 26 seconds to play, but Burns would step to the line with 11 seconds to play, knocking down a pair of free throws to extend the lead to two possessions and the Storm would hold on for the 73-71 victory.
