ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – For the second time this season, Southeastern Oklahoma State and Henderson State came down to the final seconds of the game, and like the first meeting, the Reddies found the late points, as SE fell with four seconds remaining 92-91.
The Savage Storm finished the game shooting 55.1 percent (27-49) from the floor and 27.8 percent from the three-point line and were 32-of-40 at the foul line. HSU edged out the blue and gold at the glass 29-to-27 and won the turnover battle 11-to-16.
SE had five players reach double-figure points, including 20 points from
Daniel Halldorsson and
Chandler Dickinson. Halldorsson led the side with 26 points and seven assists, while Dickinson matched his career-high 20 points and added a team-high six rebounds.
Santiago Camacho Gomez chipped in 16 points, and
Landon Condiff would see 15.
Southeastern and Henderson matched each other to start the game, but the Reddies would soon build a 10-4 lead behind a 6-0 run. The Storm kept close through baskets from Camacho Gomez and
DJ Dill before Condiff knocked down a triple to tie the game 11-all. However, SE went cold for the next four minutes, allowing HSU to grow a 21-11 lead with 10:44 remaining, and soon took their largest lead of the half after a 5-0 burst, 26-12.
From there, it was the blue and golds turn to heat up as Southeastern built a 7-0 run that was kicked off by a Condiff three-pointer. SE continued to stay on the front foot with five straight points to cut into HSU's advantage and trim the gap to four, 28-24. Camacho Gomez found his range from deep, knocking down back-to-back triples to make it a two-point game, and Dickinson eventually tied the contest 34-all with two free throws.
Dickinson remained the hot hand as he converted another layup, this time giving SE its first lead of the game, and Halldorsson would keep the Storm ahead at the halftime buzzer with a basket, 42-41.
Little separated the two sides to start the second half, as the Storm and Reddies went point for point, with hosts leading by two at the 15:53 mark, 53-51. SE tied the game 59-all on an 8-2 run and later regained the advantage 62-60 through a three-point play by Dickinson. Three straight trips to the charity stripe by the Storm kept them in front, but the Reddies would chain together a run of baskets to flip the lead back in their favor, 79-73.
Another five points by Dickinson cut the HSU lead to one, and the Storm soon strung together seven straight points, with six coming from Halldorsson to grab an 88-85 lead with :36 left in the game. However, with SE leading 91-89 with :12 remaining, the Reddies would convert a three-point play for the win.
Southeastern (6-14, 4-10 GAC) returns home to the Bloomer Sullivan Arena on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 7:30 p.m. to host Arkansas-Monticello in the second matchup of the season.
