CONROE, Texas – Southeastern Oklahoma State earns back-to-back wins on day two of the Division II First Pitch Invitational, defeating Texas A&M- International and St. Edward's.
The Savage Storm opened the day with a 2-1 win over TAMIU and later exploded for seven runs in the 7-1 win over St. Edward's to wrap up the day.
GAME ONE: SE 2, TAMIU 1
Southeastern threatened to plate the game's first run in the top of the second with the bases loaded after two free passes, but TAMIU would work out of the jam to strand the trio of runners. SE soon found the breakthrough in the following inning with a leadoff double from
Sabetha Sands, who scored on the next at-bat off an RBI-single from Illiana Olivares.
From there, both sets of pitchers limited the opposing offense, as
Emily Simmons allowed just two hits in the first five innings. The trend continued into the sixth, with the two sides going scoreless.
The Storm had their first two batters reach safely in the seventh, and Sands would provide a critical hit with a double to score pinch runner
Jazzy Rios to make 2-0. That hit would prove important, with the Dustdevils adding a run in the bottom of the seventh, and Simmons would have to work out of a loaded bases situation to help secure the 2-1 win for SE.
Sands and
Brinly Burke paced the team with two hits each, and the Storm would finish the game with nine total knocks to Texas A&M-International's seven hits.
GAME TWO: SE 7 SEU 1
The Savage Storm struck first in the third frame, recording the fourth home run of the week, this time from
Lorryn Johnson, who blasted a big fly over the center field wall for a 1-0 lead. SE added to its edge in the next frame with a two-run single by
Serenity Oden to plate
Laci Larsen and E. Simmons.
Southeastern tallied a third straight inning with a run in the fifth, as
India McMurray rocketed a line drive home run to left field to stretch the blue and gold's lead to 4-0.
In the circle, starting pitcher
Trinity Oden kept St. Edward's off the scoreboard through four innings, but SEU would pull a run back in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-1. Southeastern exploded for three more runs in the next inning to stretch its advantage to 7-1, and T. Oden would blank SEU in the final two innings to secure the win.
McMurray and Johnson led the team with three hits and combined for three RBIs, while T. Oden threw a complete game with eight strikeouts to pick up her first win of the season in the circle.
Southeastern (3-1) wraps up the DII First Pitch Invitational tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. when they take on No. 11 Angelo State.
