BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Southeastern splits day two of the Alvy Early Memorial Classic against Truman State and Drury. Due to weather, Sunday's finale versus Northeastern State has been canceled.
The Savage Storm got the day going, racking up 15 hits in a 7-4 win over Truman State, which saw
Emily Simmons improve to 3-1 on the year in the circle. In game two, a low-scoring contest would fall the way of Drury 4-2, as both sides tallied four hits.
GAME ONE: SE 7, TSU 4
Southeastern struck first in the opening frame with a solo shot from
Iliana Olivares, but Turman State was quick to reply, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the first to lead 2-1. The Storm matched TSU in the top of the second, adding three runs to its score to flip the lead to their advantage 4-2.
SE chained together four hits, including a double from
Susan Edwards to plate the first run, and a single to right field by
Sage Harlow scored two more runs. The bats stayed hot for the blue and gold, as they stretched the advantage to 6-2 after back-to-back home runs from
Jazzy Rios and
Laci Larsen to start the third inning.
TSU would pull a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fourth to cut the gap to 6-4 before Southeastern added another run in the sixth through a Rios double to make it 7-4.
Emily Simmons, who came in for relief for starting pitcher
Sheyenne Cheek, held Truman State scoreless for the final three innings to earn her third win of the season.
Rios led the team with three hits, and the Storm had five players with a multi-hit game as the team finished 15 total knocks. Cheek and E. Simmons combined for six strikeouts across the 7.0 innings.
GAME TWO: DU 4, SE 2
Southeastern and Drury traded runs in the first two innings, with the score tied 1-1 heading into the third. In the bottom of the first, a pair of Panthers errors helped Olivares reach home safely on an RBI single from Larsen. Drury would knot things up later in the top of the second with two extra-base hits.
The Panthers added to their lead in the top half of the third to extend their lead, and the Storm answered in the bottom half with a run of their own to keep a one-run game, 3-2. Both sets of pitchers kept the opposing bats quiet in the fourth for the first scoreless inning of the game, but Drury soon saw another run cross home in the fifth to stretch its edge to 4-2.
The Southeastern bats continued to be held in check by the DU's starting pitcher, who limited the blue and gold to one hit in the final three innings.
Trinity Oden pitched all 7.0 frames for the Storm and tallied a game-high 12 strikeouts while giving up four runs on four hits.
Southeastern (4-5) continues its busy start to the 2025 season, as they return to the Sooner State to take part in the Raising Cane's Softball Festival tournament.
