DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern Oklahoma State dropped the final game of the three-game series with Oklahoma Baptist, as the Bison took game three 4-0.
SE out-hit OBU 8-to-7, but seven free passes by the Savage Storm would prove the difference maker.
Kasey Simmons and
Susan Edwards led the blue and gold at the plate with two hits each, and both teams stranded ten base runners over the 7.0 innings.
Starting pitcher
Bailey Kite fell to 1-2 in the circle after going 1.1 frames, and
Sheyenne Cheek and
Alyson Malone saw the bulk of the relief action, combining for 5.0 innings of work.
Both teams issued walks to the leadoff batter in the first frame, but the two starting pitchers were able to work around the free pass to keep the game at 0-0. However, two more walks were issued by the Storm in the second, leading to the Bison scoring the first run of the contest to take a 1-0 advantage. SE threatened to reply in the bottom half of the second with two runners and one out, but back-to-back strikeouts by OBU's Jaycee Shaffer kept the runners from advancing.
Oklahoma Baptist soon added to its lead in the top of the fourth, using three hits to score a run, and relief pitcher
Emily Simmons worked out of a bases-loaded situation to limit the damage. SE again had a pair of runners on in the bottom of the fourth, but could not find the decisive hit to bring them home. The Bison later made it a 4-0 game with a two-run inning in the fifth to double up their advantage.
Southeasern's struggles at the plate with runners on continued in the sixth and seventh frames, as they had a pair of runners on in each inning but could not chain hits together. SE (18-19, 10-10) begins a road stretch with Northeastern State on Tuesday, Apr. 1, with game one of the doubleheader set for 2 p.m.
