THACKERVILLE, Okla. – The Southeastern women's golf program got its season started at the WinStar Invitational, and the Savage Storm lead the field of play at the end of one round at 1-over 289.
The blue and gold hold a one-stroke advantage over the defending National Champions Dallas Baptist, who are second at 2-over 290. West Texas A&M sit third through 18 holes of play with a score of 5-over 293, while St. Mary's and Midwestern State are tied for fourth at 7-over 295 to round out the top five.
The SE lineup has three players in the top five on the individual leaderboard, led by newcomer
Emma Thompson, who fired a 4-under 68 to sit atop the player leaderboard after one round. Thompson scattered seven birdies across the round, including four on the back nine, where she turned in her best play of the day with a 3-under 33.
Carley Button picked up where she left off a year ago and is tied for second at the end of the first 18 holes of play. Button finished with a flawless scorecard, recording three birdies and 15 pars for a score of 3-under 69.
Karen Kim followed with an even-par round, as she saw her best play on the back nine of the Par 72 course, where she shot 1-under 35 with three birdies and wound end the day with five.
Meredith Reid and
Kaeli Drake matched each other through the first round, as the duo shot 8-over 80. Reid got her round started with a 5-over 41 on the front nine and would improve on the back half with a 3-over 39. Drake scattered three birdies across her round, as she shot 4-over Par on both the front and back nine. Rounding out the day for the Storm,
Natalie Breaux carded an 11-over 83 after a 5-over 41 front nine and a 6-over 42 back nine.
Southeastern continues at the WinStar Invitational tomorrow with round two at the Par 72 WinStar Golf Club.
