Kelly Green

Kelly Green enters his 15th season as the head coach for the Southeastern Oklahoma State men’s basketball program in 2025-26 after taking over in the spring of 2011.

While at the helm of the Savage Storm, the men’s basketball team has a record of 218-178in the 13 seasons under Green and has captured two GAC regular-season championships (2021-22 and 2023-24). SE has consistently been a top team in the GAC, with Green at the helm, finishing the year inside the top two in five of the previous six seasons and making the postseason in 11 of his 13 seasons with SE.

Green has seen many great players come through the program and has helped develop 34 all-conference honorees and 15 first-team all-selections. The First Team All-GAC members include Chris Roussell (2012-13), Urald King (2013-14), Taylor Smaller (2014-15), Anton Cook (2016-17), and Kevin Buckingham (twice), Adam Dworsky (three times), Ante Brzovic (2021-22), Jett Sternberger (2022-23), Brennen Burns (2023-24) and Kody Clouet (2023-24).

Additionally, Green has coached two GAC Players of the Year in Buckingham and Dworsky. Green has had a member of his squad selected as an all-conference member in every season and even saw the league’s first Freshman of the Year when Antonio Worthy won it in 2011-12.

The 2023-24 season marked the second time in three years that Southeastern Oklahoma State claimed the regular-season championship. The Storm put together a 23-9 campaign with an 18-4 conference record. SE was led by three All-GAC players, featuring first-team members Burns and Clouet and Second Team All-GAC Kyle Leslie. Southeastern led the league in scoring with 85.7 points per game and topped the conference in field goal percentage, shooting 48.5 percent as a team.

The 2021-22 team saw the program’s first Great American Conference regular season championship after posting 24 wins overall and an 18-4 mark in league play. The team secured GAC Player and Freshman of the Year awards in Dworsky and Brzovic, respectively, while landing five players on the all-conference team. After leading SE to its first regular-season title, Green would earn GAC Coach of the Year honors for the first time.

In 2019-20, the Storm posted its second-straight second-place finish in the regular season GAC standings and a third-straight GAC tournament berth. SE finished the year with a 23-8 record and a second-straight NCAA Tournament berth. The Storm entered the NCAA Central Regional Tournament as the No. 3 seed before the post-season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Buckingham and Dworsky were each named First Team All-GAC selections in 2019-20, while Kellen Manek and Kayo Goncalves each took home all-conference honors as well. Dworsky would later set Southeastern’s season and career assists record during the 2019-20 season and smash the GAC record for assists in a season. Buckingham would finish his career as just the fourth player in school history to score 2,000 points.

In his first season with the Savage Storm, Green saw a nine-game turnaround from the year before, helping SE to a 12-17 season. Southeastern earned a spot in the GAC Tournament that season as the fifth seed, making the postseason for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

Before taking over the Storm in 2011, Green spent 14 seasons with Arizona Western College, where he became the all-time career wins leader with 342 victories. While at AWC, Green compiled five regional championships, six regional runners-up and five conference titles. He was also named Region Coach of the Year six times and District Coach of the Year three times.

He was recently elected into the ACCAC Hall of Fame for his 14 standout seasons with Arizona Western College.

Green made three stops as head coach from 1991-1997 before taking over at AWC, leading Western Texas College, Western New Mexico State and Angleton High School for a season.

His first head coaching stint came at Frank Phillips College from 1989-1991, where he was the youngest head coach in the Lone Star State at the time. He would help lead the men’s basketball team to its first winning season in a decade.

He is beginning his 40th year of coaching experience in all, including 31 years as a collegiate head coach, and has compiled a 599-329 record.

Green comes from a strong coaching background, as his late father, Cletus, registered over 750 wins as a head coach at the Division I, Division II, community college and high school levels. His father was elected into the Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2007 and inducted into the NEO Hall of Fame in 2004.

His brother Steve is one of the winningest coaches at the NJCAA level, with three National Champions at South Plains College. Before retiring at South Plains, Steve was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame.
