Charles Burks joined the Southeastern coaching staff in the spring of 2014 as the team’s defensive coordinator.
 
The 2017 defense featured five All-GAC selections and ranked sixth in the league in scoring defense, allowing 28.0 ppg, while ranking third in the conference in passing defense, allowing 192.5 yards per contest. The Storm finished the season ranked second in turnover margin as well, goiong plus-13 while forcing 23 opponent turnovers.

His 2016 defense was led by the program’s first All-American since 2009 as Raheem Wilson earned the honors from AFCA and D2CCA after leading the nation in passes defended and capping off his career as Southeastern’s all-time leader in interceptions.  The defensive unit forced 25 turnovers on the season with 14 interceptions and 11 fumbles recovered while posting the most pass breakups since the 2004 season.
 
The defense allowed 31.2 points per game and featured a foursome of all-conference honorees.
 
In his first season as the DC team turned in a five-game turnaround to finish the season at 7-5 with the program’s first postseason appearance since 2004 and the first winning season since 2009.
 
The Savage Storm played in its first bowl game since the mid-90’s when it earned a berth in the Live United Texarkana Bowl in Texarkana, Texas where it played MIAA opponent Central Missouri.
 
SE finished fifth in the GAC in scoring defense, allowing 27.6 ppg and finished positive for the season in turnover margin as they forced 25 turnovers, including 13 interceptions and 12 fumbles.
 
In his second season guiding the defense the team posted a 6-5 record and featured a pair of defensive all-conference honors in Nicholas Sierra and Raheem Wilson.
 
The Storm fnished in the top half of the league in the four major team stat categories, including being third in the league in total defense. 
 
As the secondary coach for TAMUC in 2013 he helped the team post a 7-5 record and the first winning season for the Lions since 2001, including the team's first bowl trip since the 1950's.
 
He coached a pair of all-conference honorees in the secondary in 2013.
 
Burks coached the 2012 season at West Texas A&M where he served as the cornerbacks coach for a defense that led the Lone Star Conference in defensive passing efficiency and advanced to the NCAA National Semi-Finals after winning the conference championship.
 
He started his coaching career as the secondary coach for East Central, joining the staff of his alma mater in December of 2010 and coaching the 2011 season on a defensive staff that led the conference in pass efficiency defense, yards allowed per completion and opponent's completion percentage.  While there he also coached ECU's first first team All-American in 27 years in Dontea Smith.
 
Burks also completed an internship with the Detroit Lions during the summer of 2012, working closely with current Rams Defensive Coordinator Tim Walton and Defensive Backs coach Marcus Robertson while assisting in organized team meetings and practice sessions.
 
He was a three-year letterwinner at cornerback at East Central, helping lead the Tigers to a Lone Star Conference North Division championship.
 
A native of Grand Prairie, Texas, Burks earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology in 2010, followed by his Masters in sports administration in 2011, both from ECU.
