SE Stumbles on Road Trip to NWOSU

ALVA, Okla. – If it could go wrong it did go wrong for Southeastern on its longest Oklahoma road trip as the Savage Strom was tripped up by Northwestern Oklahoma State 31-16 on Saturday afternoon in Alva, Okla.

The loss drops SE to 3-3 on the year and in Great American Conference play heading into a home matchup with Harding at 2 p.m. on Oct. 17 on Paul Laird Field.

The Storm committed four turnovers, were sacked four times and were unable to get their running game off the ground.

Ryan Polite still put together his third 300-plus yard game of the season, finishing 28-of-53 for 335 yards and two touchdowns, but was picked off three times and sacked four times.

Ronnie Green hauled in eight passes and become the first running back to post a 100-yard receiving outing this season with 108 yards.

Franky Okafor hauled in nine catches for 78 yards and a score, and Kaymon Farmer had a season-low two receptions, but did haul in a touchdown.

The rushing game on the other hand was mostly spinning its wheels all night, turning in just 42 total yards, the lowest rushing night for SE since 39 yards against Henderson State during the 2013 season.

Green had 28 yards on 14 carries and Polite added 23 yards despite losing 37 yards on sacks, while no other runner broke into double-digit yardage.

The real stunner on the day was the problems of the vaunted Storm defense who was holding teams to 270 total yards and 130 yards on the ground through the first five games.

NWOSU finished with 364 total yards and passed for 236 yards and three touchdowns.

After throwing seven interceptions last week Reid Miller completed 24-of-39 for three touchdowns and no picks.

Kevin Jones turned in his second-straight double-digit tackle game, finishing with 11 stops, including one for a loss.

Trent Hannah added five tackles, three for a loss and a sack, while DaMarius Lavender and Adam Curran combined on a sack.

Raheem Wilson and Jacoby Sanders each broke up a pair of passes.

The Storm found themselves reeling early as the Rangers used a Miller TD run and a pair of Miller TD passes to open up a 21-0 lead by the 14:36 mark of the second quarter.

The Storm finally crossed midfield midway through the second quarter, but wouldn't put points on the board until the 1:41 mark of the quarter when Polite found Okafor for a nine yard hookup to make the score 21-7 at halftime.

Joel Carlos added a 23 yard field goal in the third with 6:08 to play to close to 21-10, but the Rangers answered with 10 points, first on a 45 yard pass and the second on a 21 yard field goal to open up a 31-10 lead with 12:31 to play.

SE would commit a pair of turnovers in the fourth quarter, allowing NWOSU to eat approximately eight minutes of the quarter and limit SE's comeback chances.

The Storm would put together one last scoring drive thanks to four completions of 10 or more yards, including an 11 yard completion to Farmer, and following a fumbled PAT try, SE trailed 31-16 with 1:53 to play which would hold to be the final score.
