SE Baseball Splits Opener at TAMIU

LAREDO, Texas – Southeastern used a four-run ninth inning to erase a one-run deficit in Saturday's nightcap en route to a 6-3 win over Texas A&M-International, evening the series after dropping the opener 7-4 earlier in the afternoon in Laredo, Texas.
 
The split gives the Savage Storm a 1-1 record to open up the season heading into a rubber match against the Dustdevils at noon on Sunday.
 
Tim Hunter turned in a 3-for-4 performance, while Bryson Allen, Corban Taylor and Greg Husnander each tallied a pair of hits while the Storm racked up 11 as a team in game two.
 
Hunter finished with a pair of RBI, as did Ty Hanson who had a two-run double in his one at bat, while Logan Terwilliger recorded the team's other RBI.
 
Allen, Hanson, Hunter and Teriwlliger all recorded doubles in the game.
 
Hunter also drew a walk and stole a base on the day.
 
Keyton Jameson got the start on the hill but took a no decision after going 5.0 innings and allowing a pair of runs on three hits with four strikeouts.
 
Cory Scheibner would pick up the win in relief in his first appearance at SE, going 3.0 innings and allowing a run on two hits with four K's.
 
Brady Colbert came on to toss the bottom of the ninth inning and picked up the save with a pair of strikeouts.
 
SE got on the board in the top of the fourth taking advantage of back-to-back singles by Taylor and Husnander followed by a passed ball before Hunter would single home Taylor followed by an RBI double by Terwilliger to open up a 2-0 lead.
 
TAMIU would respond in the sixth with a pair of runs to knot the contest at 2-2, and a leadoff homer in the bottom of the seventh put the home team up 3-2.
 
Kaleb Thomas opened the ninth with a walk and moved to third on an Allen double.
 
Connor Counce would later reach on a fielder's choice, but Thomas was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning.
 
However, Taylor would reach on an error by the TAMIU shortstop and Allen would score the game-tying run.
 
That opened the offense as Hanson followed with a two-run double to plate Taylor and Counce, immediately followed by a Hunter double that plated Hanson for the 6-3 lead.
 
Colbert would come on for the ninth inning and strikeout the first two batters before coaxing the final out to groundout to second base.
 
The opener was not as friendly to the Storm who picked up four hits in the contest, two of them coming from Allen, while Dylan Helms and Jake Perez each added one.
 
Allen and Perez recorded an RBI apiece, while Helms scored twice and added a stolen base.
 
Dylan Linke was hit with the loss after allowing six runs in 2.1 innings pitched on five hits.
 
Mathew Benedict would toss one-third of an inning, allowing a run on three hits before Mike Wade came in and threw the final 3.1 innings without allowing a hit and striking out three.
 
An Allen RBI single scored Helms in the top of the first to give SE a 1-0 lead early.
 
TAMIU would answer though with two runs in the bottom of the first, two more in the second and three in the third to open up a 7-1 lead.
 
The Storm tried to mount a rally, first with Helms driving in Terwilliger on an error in the fifth which was followed by a Brandon Grimsley sac fly.
 
Perez would then add an RBI double in the seventh to plate Allen to fashion he final of 7-4.
