Baseball Takes Rubber Match at TAMIU

LAREDO, Texas – Southeastern scored the first seven runs of the game and Dylan Helms posted a three-hit outing at the plate to help the Savage Storm to a 7-2 victory in the rubber match of a three-game series against Texas A&M-International in Laredo, Texas on Sunday.

The win lifts SE to 2-1 to open the season and will be back on the road Feb. 6 in Tahlequah, Okla., for a double-header against Northeastern State at noon.

Helms finished the day at the plate with a 3-for-5 outing that included an RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Ty Hanson joined him in having a multi-hit contest with a 2-for-4 performance and an RBI as well.

Seven Storm hitters picked up a hit as SE tallied 10 as a team, while Helms, Hanson, Kaleb Thomas, Bryson Allen, Corban Taylor and Connor Counce each recorded an RBI.

Southeastern was able to open up its lead thanks to 5.0 scoreless inning from starter Scott Richards who picked up a win in his Storm debut after striking out four and allowing five hits.

Brady Colbert tossed 3.1 innings in relief and was tagged for two runs on two hits with four strikeouts before Michael Brinska came on to record the final two outs, doing so in three batters.

SE opened scoring in the top of the second when Tim Hunter took advantage of an error by TAMIU's left fielder to score from first on a ball put in play by Hanson.

Thiongs would stay quiet until the sixth inning when the Storm again took advantage of a Dustdevil error which allowed Helms to reach third base safely to lead off the inning, followed by an RBI single by Thomas to make the score 2-0.

Helms would tack on another run in the seventh with an RBI single that plated Hunter, with Hanson driving home Taylor in the eighth to open up a 4-0 lead.

Then with two runners on in the top of the ninth Allen would drive in the first of three straight runs with Helms scoring on a single.

That was followed by a Taylor squeeze bunt one batter later, which was in turn followed by a Counce double which plated Allen to stretch the advantage to 7-0.

TAMIU would take advantage of a pair of one-out walks in the bottom of the ninth and drive in two runs to fashion the 7-2 final score.
