WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Southeastern entered Saturday's matchup with a chance to secure a spot in the Great American Conference postseason tournament, but will have to find a new path to that goal after suffering a 3-0 road loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday night in Weatherford, Okla.
Â
The loss drops the Savage Storm to 11-16 overall on the season and 4-10 in Great American Conference play, still in possession of the eighth and final spot in the league's postseason tournament, but hold a narrow lead over Southern Arkansas who it would own a tiebreaker with if needed, and East Central who the Storm will play in its final game of the season on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. in Bloomer Sullivan Gymnasium.
Â
But first the Storm will have to close out the road portion of its schedule when it faces Oklahoma Baptist on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. in Shawnee, Okla.
Â
Abby Jameson was the lone SE hitter to top double-figures with 10 kills, while
Julia Benford was right behind with nine, with
Karine Cavalcante and
Arianna Baker adding eight each.
Â
Alissa Benson dished out 37 assists over three sets, averaging 12.3 per set, while also adding 11 digs and a block.
Â
Caitlin Cosby continued to be the highlight on the defensive side of the net with 20 digs for the match to lead all defenders, while Benson's 11 were next in line for the Storm.
Â
Baker would add a team-best two blocks on defense at the net.
Â
A huge 8-1 SWOSU run would wipe out a Storm lead in the first set and put SE in a 15-10 hole and despite closing the gap, the Bulldogs would pull out a 7-2 run to end the set at 25-18.
Â
The Storm led the second set by as many as five points, the last of those leads coming at 17-12, but SWOSU rallied and would erase a 21-19 deficit down the stretch to hand SE a 25-23 loss in the set.
Â
The Bulldogs looked to take control early in the third set, but a 10-3 run would give the Storm a 15-12 edge midway through the set which earned a SWOSU timeout. Following the stoppage the home team scored six straight points to open up a 13-5 run to end the set at 25-20 and the match at 3-0.
