DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern saw its streak of conference series victories come to an end as Arkansas-Monticello handed the Savage Storm a pair of tough losses, going 13-3 in the first game before erasing an SE lead in game two for a 6-5 win in extra innings on Saturday afternoon at The Ballpark in Durant.
Â
The losses dropped the Storm to 24-21 overall on the season and 19-11 in Great American Conference play and in addition to ending its streak of series victories, it turns into the first time the team has been swept in a league series since 2014.
Â
SE falls back into a tie with Oklahoma Baptist for third in the GAC standings and would be in line for the third-seed in the postseason tournament heading into the final weekend of the regular season when the Storm will host rival East Central April 29-30 at The Ballpark in Durant.
Â
It seemed every break went against the Storm on Saturday as in game one SE held UAM to just seven hits, but the visitors were able to take advantage of 10 walks and four hit batters to put up 13 runs, primarily during a seven-run fifth inning.
Â
Logan Terwilliger and
Brandon Grimsley each collected a pair of hits, with Grimcley driving in a pair of runs and
Kaleb Thomas bringing home the other.
Â
Miek Wade got the start and suffered the loss after going 4.0 innings and allowing six runs on four hits with three walks and a pair of striekouts.
Â
Scott Brinkley faced five batters and recorded one out and was tagged for four runs on two hits before
Bryce Clemons came on to toss an inning and allow three runs on a hit.
Â
Cody Luman finished off the game with 1.2 innings pitched without allowing a run.
Â
The Boll Weevils jumped to a 6-0 lead with three runs in the second and another three in the fourth innings.
Â
A Grimsley RBi single in the bottom of the fourth cut into the deficit, but a seven-0run fifth inning left the Storm in a 13-1 hole.
Â
Singles by Thomas and Grimsley would each drive in runs in the fifth, but it was not enough to stave off the run rule in seven innings.
Â
Things looked to turn in game two as
Brady Colbert got his first start of the year and struck out six over eight innings but was tagged for six runs, five earned, over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings Â
Â
He would take his second loss and fall to 4-2 on the year.
Â
The Storm took a 4-0 lead with a
Corban Taylor RBI single in the first and a two-run Grimsley double followed by Terwilliger stealing home to open up a 4-0 lead after five.
Â
UAM would steak a pair of runs back in the sixth, but it was a two-run homer in the seventh that knotted the game at 4-4 and sent it to an extra inning where UAM added two more runs for a 6-4 lead.
Â
Greg Husnander singled down the left field line to score
Dylan Helms, but that was all the rally they would muster in a 6-5 loss.
Â
Husnander was the only SE player to collect multiple hits with two, while seven others had one each.
Â
Grimsley added two more RBI to his total, while Taylor and Husnander picked up one each.
