DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern scored its second-straight conference win on Saturday with a 3-0 defeat of Arkansas-Monticello in Bloomer Sullivan Gymnasium.
Â
The win is also the third in the last four matches and lifts the Savage Storm to 8-17 overall on the year and 4-7 in Great American Conference play.
Â
"I'm very happy," said head coach
Brianna Barry following the win. "We knew yesterday that Monticello was going to be a strong team, we couldn't underestimate them. They have had some really good matches in conference this year, but we just needed to come out and play clean volleyball. The first and second set we did, and then we got comfortable, which seems to be a problem with our team right now. We were able to win in three, and that is huge for us, and getting out of this weekend 2-0 is awesome."
Â
Arianna Baker led the offense for the Savage Storm with 12 kills while hitting .409, with
Hallie Smith checking in next with nine.
Abby Jameson finished the match with six kills and leaves herself one kill shy of 1,000 kills for her career.
Â
Alissa Benson dished out 32 assists to pace the offense and added a pair of kills as well as an ace and 11 digs.
Â
Caitlin Cosby led the defense with 25 digs and added three aces and a pair of assists. Benson's 11 digs were next in line, while Jameson finished with nine.
Â
Baker finished the match with three blocks, while Smith and Jameson turned in two each.
Â
Southeastern used a huge 17-4 run to take control of the set at 19-10 and cruise to a 20-15 win in the first set.
Â
The Storm opened the second set on a 7-1 run and led by as many as 10 points before UAM closed the gap late to 21-18 at which point SE responded with the final four points to win the set 25-18 and go up 2-0 in the match.
Â
UAM ran out to an early 5-1 lead in the third set, but the Storm clawed back and tied the set at 13-13. The Cotton Blossoms would briefly jump in front at that point, but a 7-1 run by SE would give the home team a 20-16 lead.
