SE Posts Huge Rally to Split Saturday

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern closed out day two of the Southeastern Regional Invitational with an improbable come-from-behind extra-inning 13-12 victory over Missouri Southern to split its Saturday action after falling 13-5 to Central Missouri earlier in the day at the Durant Multi-Sport Complex.

The Savage Storm move to 3-1 on the season heading into the final day of the event where they will face Emporia State at noon on the Southeastern Softball field before returning to the complex to finish the weekend with Pittsburg State at 5 p.m.

In the thrilling nightcap the Strom used a seven-run fifth inning to overcome a 5-1 deficit and mount an 8-5 lead.

SE closed the gap in that inning with RBI singles from Marisa Fleck and Conner Harmon to make it 5-3, and would take the lead when Mykaela Wallace gapped a three-run triple to take a 6-5 lead.

A Keeshia Thompson RBI double followed by a Symphoni Shomo RBI single would stretch that lead to 8-5 after five innings.

However, MSSU would rally in the top of the seventh with a trio of runs to force extra innings.

It was in the top half of the eighth that the Lions would load the bases for Shelby Friend who would connect on a grand slam to center field to leave the Storm in a dire 12-8 hole.

With the international tie breaker rules in effect, Shomo would take her place on second base and score two batters later when Destiny Riddle would cut the deficit in half with a homer to left to make it 12-10 with one out.

Two batter later Jordyn James drew a two-out walk with Emily Cudd coming on to run for her.

Harmon was then hit by a pitch to put a pair of runners on for Wallace who connected on a three-run home run to win the game in walkoff fashion.

Shomo, Kennedy Salyers, Riddle, Wallace and Brittany Chetallier each collected two hits, with Wallace driving in six runs, followed by a pair from Riddle and one each from five others.

Cudd got the start in the circle and tossed 3.1 innings but was tagged for seven runs, six earned, on seven hits with a strikeout.

Riddle came on in relief and tossed 4.2 innings and allowed five runs on six hits with three K's.

In the day's opener against Central Missouri, Shomo and Harmon each collected a pair of hits as the Storm tallied nine all together, with Riddle driving in a pair of runs, while Salyers, Fleck and James has an RBI each.

Hunter Offill got the start and suffered the loss in the contest, allowing four runs, two earned, on three hits.

Ashley Moore tossed 2.2 inings in relief and was tagged for three runs, two earned, on four hits with four strikeouts.

Salyers then tossed a third of an inning, facing one batter, before Cudd tossed the final three innings and was hit for six runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts.
