Baseball Drops Series Opener at SWOSU

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Southeastern took a lead into the seventh inning on the road against Southwestern Oklahoma State, but was unable to hang on for the win, falling 9-6 in the series opener on Friday afternoon in Weatherford, Okla.
 
The loss drops the Savage Storm to 8-11 overall and 4-6 in Great American Conference play with a noon double-header slated for Saturday in Weatherford, Okla.
 
Brett Akins, Joseph Cerda, and Cade Clay each logged a pair of hits, while Bryce Deatherage, Austin Ferguson, Easton Elliott, Harrison Whitworth, and Jett Swigart each added one hit.
 
Elliott drove in a pair of runs on a home run, while Ferguson and Whitworth added an RBI each.
 
Cody Nitson got the start and finished with a no decision after tossing 6.0 innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits while striking out seven.
 
Cody Johnson threw 1.1 innings in relief and allowed three runs on three hits to take the loss.
 
Jake Patterson faced a pair of batters, walking both and suffering a pair of runs allowed, with Haden Grimes closing out the contest with two-thirds of an inning, allowing a run on two hits with one strikeout.
 
SWOSU took a 1-0 lead on a solo homer in the second inning, and the Storm finally found its answer in the top of the fifth, tying the game on a Ferguson RBI single to plate Swigart.
 
Travis Spinney would give SE a 2-1 lead on a wild pitch during the next at bat and two batters later an error would allow Ferguson to score and open up a 3-1 lead.
 
A pair of RBI singles in the bottom half of the inning would tie the game at 3-3.
 
An Elliott two-run homer in the top of the seventh would break the tie and make the lead 5-3.
 
The Bulldogs would answer though with a two-run single in the bottom half of the seventh and add four runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 9-5 lead.
 
Whitworth would drive in Akins in the top of the ninth, but that is where the rally would end in a 9-6 loss.
