BETHANY, Okla. – Southeastern bounced back from an 11-1 run-rule loss in Saturday's opener to cruise to a 16-6 victory in the series finale over Southern Nazarene in Bethany, Okla.
The split moves the Savage Storm to 18-22 overall and 13-14 in the Great American Conference.
In the finale,
Slayde Ortiz turned in a 3-for-5 effort to lead the way, while
Travis Spinney,
Austin Ferguson,
Brett Akins, and
Harrison Whitworth added two hits apiece.
Joseph Cerda led the way in RBI four runs driven in, while Ortiz added three, with Ferguson and Whitworth plating two each.
Bryce Deatherage got the start and picked up a complete-game victory after allowing six runs on seven hits in seven innings pitched.
SE opened with five runs in the top of the first inning on RBI hits from Ferguson, Ortiz, and
Caleb Dubler, while Swigart added an RBI groundout and the Storm took advantage of an error.
A Ferguson RBI single and a sac fly from
Easton Elliott would push the lead to 7-0 midway through the second inning.
An RBI double by Spinney in the third, followed by a two-run single and a sac fly from Whitworth and Cerda in the fifth would push the lead all the way out to 11-0.
Ortiz would add a two-run homer in the sixth and Cerda shipped in a three-run home run in the seventh to go up 16-0 midway through the seventh.
SNU would score six in the bottom of the seventh, but that was as far as the rally would go, making the final score 16-6.
In the opener on Saturday, Ferguson was the only SE player to connect on multiple hits, while Spinney posted the only RBI.
Greg Hubbell got the start and took the loss after tossing 6.0 innings and allowing seven runs, five earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts.
Dallas Guerrero was tagged for four runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning of relief and
Bailey Burks would face the final two hitters without recording an out.
SNU jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in each of the second and third innings.
SE answered with a run in the top of the fourth when Spinney drew a bases-loaded walk to cut it to 4-1 midway through the fourth inning.
The Crimson Storm tacked on two more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to put Southeastern in a 7-1 hole after six innings which stretched to the final of 11-1 after a four-run seventh triggered the run-rule.
