Offense Tops Defense in 2019 Spring Game

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern's 2019 Spring Game featured big plays on both sides of the ball as the offense connected on three touchdown passes over 50 yards and would top the defense by a final score of 48-35 on Saturday morning at Paul Laird Field.

The format featured four 12-minute quarters with running clock and the defense was spotted a 28-0 lead to protect and was able to add to it with turnovers.

"All the guys getting reps and being in game situations was critical for us," said head coach Tyler Fenwick. "I think what impressed me the most was we had plays on both sides of the ball.  We had plays on defense with the pick-six and we stopped the run really well. We had explosive plays on offense. I thought our guys played hard and they were really in the moment."

The offense opened the game in style as the ball was placed on its own 25-yard line and on the very first play Rollin Kinsaul connected with Cody Norris for a 75-yard strike to close the score to 28-7 right out of the gate.

That was the only score the offense would put up however as the defense shined over the rest of the first quarter with Alexce Marshall and Scooter Baker each recording sacks, but the big play came on a Marshall pick-six on a blown-up screen pass to put the defense up 35-7.

Jorge Vargas would hit Felton Hatcher in the second quarter for another long pass, this one going 53 yards to get the offense back on the board at 35-14.

The defense was still stout as Marshall recorded a third sack while Camerion Pumphrey added one as well, holding the halftime score to 35-14.

The offense would pick up its pace in the third quarter as Jayshun Anderson would score the game's first rushing touchdown to close the gap to 35-21, and Kinsaul would post a repeat performance of his opening play, this time hitting Felton Hatcher for 75 yards to end the third quarter 35-28.

Rogerick Kirby would tack on a sack late in the third to help the defense take a 35-28 lead into the fourth quarter.

The offense would really hit stride in the final frame, with Daulton Hatley running it in from five yards out for the second rushing score of the day, but a missed two-point try would leave the offense trailing 35-34.

It would be Kinsaul who would put the offense in front when he hit Skye Lowe for a 43-yard pass to take a 41-35 lead.

CJ Shavers would tack on a final score on a three-yard touchdown run late in the game to fashion the final score of 48-35.

Kinsaul finished the game connecting on 7-of-10 passes with three touchdowns, while Vargas added a TD pass and hit 7-of-11 passing.

Austin Skinner completed 4-of-6 passes, while Hatley was 3-of-9 but added a rushing score.

Hatcher finished with a pair of TD receptions, while Lowe and Norris each added one.

Anderson, Hatley, and Shavers each scored rushing touchdowns.
