Storm Sweep PSU in Doubleheader

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Southeastern collected 20 hits over two games, including four homers, on its way to a doubleheader sweep of Pittsburg State on Tuesday afternoon in Pittsburg, Kan., taking game one 10-7 in extra innings before finishing the day with a 6-1 victory.

The wins lift the Savage Storm to 15-2 overall on the season heading into a Wednesday twinbill against Southwest Baptist at 2 p.m. in Bolivar, Mo.

Cheyenne Mahy had an all-around game in the opener, turning in a 4-for-5 effort at the plate, including a home run, with two RBI and three runs scored, while also tossing 2.0 innings in relief and picking up the victory after allowing a hit and striking out three.

Kyia Monahwee collected a pair of hits, including her first home run of the season, and drove in three runs, while Kady Fryrear, Augusta Duty, Peyton Streetman, and Jaleigh Durst each added hits, including Durst connecting on her third homer of the year.

Amberlyn Walsworth got the start in the circle and was tagged for seven runs on five hits with seven strikeouts across from two walks, but finished with a no decision.

Mahy's 2.0 innings of scoreless work would earn her the win.

After a three-run second and two more in the third by PSU, the Storm found itself in a deep hole early.

SE started the climb out of that hole in the top of the fourth, loading the bases before a Streetman single would plate a pinch-running Brooklyn Field to get on the board.

Mahy would come on an error a batter later to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Monahwee would complete the comeback an inning later when she connected on her first homer of the year, a three-run shot to knot the game at 5-5.

The Gorillas would answer with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, but a leadoff homer by Durst in the sixth and a PSU wild pitch with runners at the corners that allowed Monahwee to score from third in the top of the seventh would square the game at 7-7 and force extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Fryrear would break the tie with an RBI single, and Mahy would tack on insurance runs with a two-run homer to take a 10-7 lead which would hold up as the final.

In the nightcap, Mahy got the start and collected her second win of the day after tossing 6.0 innings and allowing an unearned run on four hits with three strikeouts, improving to 6-1 on the season.

Ashley Hedrick would come on to toss the final inning and pick up her first save of the season after allowing a hit and striking out one.

Offensively, Fryrear, Streetman, and Kamarie Wallace each had a pair of hits, with Fryrear collecting her first homer of the season.

Mahy, Monahwee, Alexis Lambert, and Gracie Ore each added hits.

Fryrear led the way with three RBI, while Monahwee and Lambert each drove in one.

PSU took the lead with a run in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of a pair of Storm errors.

SE bounced right back as a Fryrear single coupled with a fielding error would bring home three runs and stake a 3-1 lead for the Storm.

A Monahwee RBI single and a Lambert bases-loaded walk would tack on two more runs in the top of the fifth, stretching the lead to 5-1.

Fryrear's solo homer in the top of the sixth would push the lead out to 6-1 which would be the final margin.
