DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern's home finale featured all the drama a fan could want as a
Cheyenne Mahy two-run double late would push the Savage Storm in front for good in a 3-2 series-clinching victory over Arkansas Tech on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at the Southeastern Softball Field.
Â
The win secured a 2-1 series win for the Storm and lifted them to 34-7 overall on the season and 24-6 in Great American Conference play with a single three-game series at Harding May 6-7 remaining on the regular season schedule.
Â
Mahy led the SE offense with a 2-for-3 performance, including a big two RBI double, while
Kyia Monahwee,
Gracie Ore, and
Augusta Duty each added a hit.
Â
Mahy accounted for the only two RNBI, while Monahwee stole a pair of bases, including home.
Â
Mahy got the start in the circle as well and left with a no decision after allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits.
Â
Amberlyn Walsworth would come on in relief and pick up the win, her 16
th of the season, after allowing no runs on just one hit in 2.1 innings of work with a strikeout.
Â
Monahwee would single to lead off the bottom of the second inning and follow by stealing second. She moved to third on a sac bunt by
Kamarie Wallace and would complete the trip around by stealing home off the catcher on the return throw to the pitcher, taking a 1-0 lead.
Â
An ATU home run in the top of the fourth would tie the game at 1-1 and would take a 2-1 lead on an RBI double in the top of the fifth inning.
Â
In the bottom half of the fifth,
Kady Fryrear drew a two-out walk and a pinch-running
Brooklyn Field would steal second on a play in which SE hitter
Peyton Streetman was hit by a pitch and took off to first but the HBP was not acknowledged by the home plate umpire, bringing Streetman back to the plate, but leaving Field at second since there had been no dead ball situation.
Â
Streetman would eventually draw a walk, bringing Mahy to the plate where she clubbed a double over the head of the center fielder, plating Field and Streetman for the 3-2 lead.
Â
Walsworth would retire the Suns in order in the sixth, but ATU would threaten in the top of the seventh with a double and a walk to put the go-ahead run on base before coaxing a fly out to center to end the game with the 3-2 win.
