EDMOND, Okla. – Southeastern had a tough go on day one of the Edmond Regional Invite, first falling to No. 14 Rogers State 7-1 before closing out the day with a narrow 8-7 loss to Missouri southern State.
Â
The losses drop the Savage Storm to 7-6 on the season heading into day two of the event when they face Cameron at 10:30 a.m. in Edmond, Okla., before closing out the weekend with Chadron State at Piedmont, Okla., at 3 p.m.
Â
In the opener,
Kamryn Rackley,
Peyton Streetman, and
Marilyn Alvarado each collected a hit, while
Cheyenne Mahy drove in a run.
Â
In the circle,
Amberlyn Walsworth got the start and tossed 6.0 innings and allowed seven runs, four earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts.
Â
The Storm took advantage of a Streetman triple as Mahy laid down a squeeze bunt to take a 1-0 lead.
Â
That held until the bottom of the second inning as RSU connected on a two-run homer and three hitters later tacked on a run for a 3-1 lead.
Â
The Hillcats followed with a run in the third, two more in the fourth and a final run in the fifth to set the 7-1 final score.
Â
Wallace and
Alexis Lambert each collected two hits, while Monahwee and
Jaleigh Durst added one each.
Â
Wallace and Monahwee collected two RBI each, with
Gracie Ore and Lambert driving in one apiece.
Â
Mahy got the start but lasted just 1.1 innings, allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits in 1.1 innings pitched.
Â
Walsworth would come on in relief and ultimately take the loss despite going 5.2 innings and allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven.
Â
MSSU opened with a three-run first inning but the Storm was able to respond with a Monahwee double in the bottom half to close the gap to 3-2.
Â
However, the Lions would tack on three more runs in the second, with SE picking up just one in the bottom half of the inning to trim the deficit to 6-3.
Â
SE would get its next answer in the third inning as Ore first drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in a run followed by an RBI by Wallace and Streetman scoring on an error, knotting the game at 6-6.
Â
A two run double by MSSU in the top of the sixth would break the tie, and Southeastern was only able to get one of those runs back in the bottom half as Lambert singled home Monahwee to set the final at 8-7.
