ST. JOSEPH, Mo. –
Caitlin Kobiske led all scorers with 17 points, but it was not enough to lift Southeastern to a win in its season opener as the Savage Storm fells to Concordia-St. Paul 67-43 on Friday night in the Central Region Challenge in St. Joseph, Mo.
Â
The loss drops SE to 0-1 to open the season with game two of the challenge slated for 5:15 p.m. on Saturday night versus Winona State in St. Joseph, Mo.
Â
Kobiske picked up her 17 points on the strength of a 9-of-10 effort at the free throw line and just missed a double-double as she pulled down nine rebounds while adding three steals and a blocked shot.
Â
Grace Alverson,
Lauryn Scalice, and
Lauren Beason each added six points.
Â
Holli Lindley matched Kobiske on the boards with nine rebounds, while
Aimee Alverson handed out a team best two assists.
Â
SE struggled out of the gate, hitting just one field goal in the opening quarter and going 5-of-6 at the free throw line, while the defense held CSP to a 3-of-11 effort from the field, but saw them hit 8-of-10 free throws and the Storm trailed 14-7 after one quarter.
Â
Southeastern would score the first five points of the second quarter, all coming courtesy of Kobiske, closing the gap to 14-12 by the 6:57 mark of the frame.
Â
SE would make it a single possession game at 20-17 on another pair of Kobiske free throws with 2:03 to play, but the Golden Bears would score the final six points of the half and lead 26-17 at the break.
Â
The Storm would cut the deficit to five points early in the third quarter after a
Grace Alverson three, but CSP would respond with a 14-0 run to lead 42-23 with 2:39 to play in the third before taking a 46-26 lead into the final quarter.
Â
SE would see its deficit grow to as many as 28 points before the Storm closed the final deficit to 67-43.
