BETHANY, Okla. – Turnovers plague Southeastern Oklahoma State in the second half of the 72-60 defeat to No. 25 Southern Nazarene in the Sawyer Center.
The Savage Storm shot at 39.6 percent (21-53) from the field for the game and were 6-of-20 from beyond the arc with 12 free throws. SE committed 16 turnovers over the 40 minutes, including 11 in the second half, while grabbing 42 rebounds.
Chandler Dickinson and
Ethan Wilkerson paced the scoring with 14 points each, and Wilkerson would add a team and season-high 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
Santiago Camacho Gomez chipped in nine points with a team-high three triples, while
Robert Briley and
DJ Dill combined for 16 points.
Southern Nazarene began the scoring with an early three-pointer, which was quickly matched by a three-point play from
Jalen Williams, and moments later, Dickinson knocked down a triple to give SE a 6-5 edge. SNU regained the lead on a 6-0 run, but a three-pointer by Camacho Gomez would ignite a 9-0 flurry from Southeastern to build a four-point advantage.
The hosts continued to score in bursts, making three straight baskets to flip the lead back in favor of the Crimson Storm, but SE stayed close, tying the game 17-all and later 21-all after a
Daniel Halldorsson layup. SNU would take over from there, building a 10-2 run to grab the lead before halftime, 31-26, after Dickinson connected from deep for the second time in the half.
The Crimson Storm carried the late first-half momentum into the second stanza, opening the period with a 13-2 run off four turnovers by SE to push the lead to 44-28. The Southeastern scoring ran through Dill and Dickinson over the next two minutes, who provided the blue and gold its next seven points to cut into the gap 49-36. SNU continued to shoot at a high clip, knocking down two more triples to extend the lead.
SNU began to cool off, allowing Southeastern to chain together baskets, including eight points from Wilkerson over six minutes to trim the gap to 66-53 with 3:01 remaining. However, the Crimson Storm's lead would prove too much, as Southern Nazarene won 72-60. Southeastern (6-12, 4-8) continues its road stint at Ouachita Baptist on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m.
